2Where local rohe are also occupied by a number of other iwi or hapū, the tangata whenua or mana whenua view will take precedence. Other iwi or hapū views should be encouraged in order to enrich and enhance understanding of key Māori concepts and practices.
3Glossary
For the purpose of this unit standard:
Maramataka – a system of planting throughout the lunar months.
Hākari – is referred to as a celebration.
Ohaoha – refers to practice of exchanging kai.
4Local tikanga practices may include but are not limited to:
–the traditional use of pest control,
–soil modification and development,
–the use of implements,
–the use of maramataka,
–the process of māhiti,
–the use of karakia,
–whanaungatanga,
–hākari,
-ohaoha.
5Legislation relevant to this unit standard include but are not limited to:
Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (Available at;

and any Act amendments.
Environmental Protection Authority Act 2011 (Available at;
and any Act amendments.
6Range
Crops may include but is not limited to – kānga, rīwai, hue, kamokamo, paukena, kūmara, taro;
evidence of two is required.
7Each crop has specific storage requirements which include but are not limited to – indoors and outdoors.

Outcome 1
Plan to store crops in accordance with local tikanga.
Performance criteria
1.1Objectives for the storage of crops are planned for in accordance with local tikanga.
Rangemay include but is not limited to – production, quality, seed sources, future prospects;
evidence of two is required.
1.2Storage practices are planned for in accordance with crops requirements and local tikanga.
Rangemay include but is not limited to – indoor, underground;
evidence of one is required.
1.3Storage methods are planned for in accordance with crops requirements and local tikanga.
Rangemay include but is not limited to – mahiti, curing, elevated, rua;
evidence of twois required.
1.4Deviations to the plan are included in accordance with crops requirements and local tikanga.
Rangemay include but is not limited to – crop diseases, moisture, temperature;
evidence of two is required.
Outcome 2
Prepare the storage facility in accordance with local tikanga.
Performance criteria
2.1Storage facility is prepared in accordance with crops requirements, the plan, and local tikanga.
Rangemay include traditional and/or contemporary, outdoors or indoors;
evidence of two is required.
2.2Equipment required is prepared for in accordance with crops requirements, and local tikanga.
Outcome 3
Carry out the storage of crops in accordance with local tikanga.
Performance criteria
3.1Storage of crops is carried out in accordance with crops requirements and the plan.
Outcome 4
Evaluate the storage of crops in accordance with tikanga.
Performance criteria
4.1The methods applied in the storage of the crops are evaluated in terms of the outcome of the crop.
4.2Any deviations from the plan are evaluated in terms of the effects on the crops outcomes.
4.3Areas for improvement in storage are evaluated in terms of enhancing the future outcome of the crops.
