How can I know if I am saved?
Resting on Past Experiences
It is dangerous for anyone to build or base their hopes of salvation on a distant or past conversion experience. Although spiritual experiences of the past may and should be remembered with much consideration and joy, apart from Christ they are but a foundation made of sand. Past experiences cannot really prove the reality of conversion and they cannot give us a claim of heaven. The foundation of a believers hope is not his/her past experience of passing from death unto life, but rather his/her present union to Christ now; although the past experience may still ever be a reason of humble gratitude. The reality of salvation is best known at the present. Do you now have communion with God through Christ at the present? Do you desire now to be holy? Do you long to know more and see more of Christ? Do you at the present see beauty in Christ and His sacrifice for sin? Do you in the present still flee to Jesus, cling to Jesus, live out of Jesus? (Galatians 5:22-26, Matthew 5:3-11, Philippians 3:7-10). Let us then ever cling to our Saviour and commit our bodies and souls into the almighty hands of our faithful, Triune God. (1 John 1:7; 3:14; Galatians 5:22; Psalm 121; I Peter 1:5).
But perhaps you still question whether your past experiences were ever really true. It is important to search into this, but then again, you must remember that your past experiences make no difference in the way that you must now respond to the gospel. Regardless of whether or not your experiences were really from God, you must now, in the present, hide in the wounds of Jesus and wash in His blood for all your salvation and acceptance before God. Even if you never were truly saved in the past, you must now cling to Jesus; let Him now be your only Refuge and Hiding Place from the wrath of God against sin, and you shall be saved. Take this prayer of David and make it your own: “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah” (Psalm 61:2-4). Go, just as you are, to Jesus for He has promised: “him that cometh unto Me, I will in no wise cast out.” Ah, this is a broad promise. None are excluded, all are welcome! “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17). Come, even now come! (1 John 1:7; John 6:37; Isaiah 55:3).
