CRITERIA FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS (CEU)
MARYLAND RECREATION AND PARK ASSOCIATION
Professional Certification Board
- Sessions must be at least one (1) full hour of instruction (contact hour) per unit. For example, two (2) contact hours = .2 CEUs.
- If a session is divided into parts, a participant must attend all parts to receive CEUs. Partial credit will not be given.
- Speakers cannot earn CEUs for the session they are presenting.
- Resumes are required for all presenters. The Professional Certification Board is responsible for ensuring that the presenter is qualified to speak on the topic.
- The maximum number of speakers acceptable per contact hour is two.
- Needs Identification - What is the issue or problem you are addressing? Needs may be identified within a society, profession, community, organization, or individual. The process should identify who is affected by the need; that is, who the potential learners should be. Topic should be specific to group being addressed.
- Program objectives should be clear and concise statements of intended learning outcomes. They should specify the knowledge, skills or attitudes learners will acquire relative to the parks and recreation field. Program objectives must be measurable.
- Program Outline - Submit a detailed outline of your session. Include topics with sub-topics. Indicate the time sequence for each topic/activity in your presentation, and who will be presenting each segment. Please note that breaks and lunch are not part of the program content.
- Proposals must be received on or before 8 weeks prior to the program to the Professional Standards Branch Representative for review. The final application must be submitted on or before 6 weeks to the PCB Members listed on the application. No FAXED applications or handwritten applications will be accepted.
10. Evaluations are a mandatory part of the CEU process.
11. Programs approved for CEU credit, if repeated, must have the same speakers, content, and time frame. If the initial application did not indicate that the session would be repeated, a new application must be submitted.

GUIDELINES FOR COMPLETING THE CEU APPLICATION FORM
- Program Title - Enter the program title, as it will appear in your brochure or flyer.
- Needs Identification - What is the issue or problem you are addressing? (Why are you addressing it with this group?) Needs may be identified within a society, profession, community, organization, or individual. The process should identify who is affected by the need; that is, who the potential learners should be. Topic should be specific to group being addressed.
- Program Objectives - Program objectives must be stated in terms of what the learner is expected to accomplish as a result of the learning activity. Outcome statements typically specify the knowledge, skills, or attitudes learners will acquire and be able to demonstrate during or following the learning experience. Objectives must be observable and measurable.
When writing objectives, verbs which ARE NOT observable and measurable cannot be used. (“understand”, “learn”, “appreciate”, “grasp”, “improve”, “enhance”) Suggested verbs to use would include “define”, “identify”, “list”, “name”, “outline”, “recognize”, “discuss”, “estimate”, “summarize”.
- Evaluations are a required part of the CEU process. It is recommended that you submit a copy of the evaluation that you will be using with your application. If you are using the standard evaluation from the Maryland Recreation and Park Association, please indicate that in your cover letter. It is your responsibility to have the evaluations on site for your program. Contact the MRPA office at (301) 942-7203.
- There is a $5.00 fee for all non-MRPA members to receive CEUs. Please make sure that this information is on your brochure/flyer, and that the money is collected at your program and forwarded to MRPA with the CEU verification forms and evaluations.
