Selective Description: Introduce the specialty of non-operative sports medicine. Opportunities to include: working in the sports medicine clinics at Campus Health, McKale Center, Arizona Institute for Sports Medicine; event coverage as presents during season (which may include Intercollegiate events, Sports Clubs and High School Football). The rotating resident will work closely with the primary care sports medicine fellows, and the fellowship teaching faculty. Attendance is expected at all didactics which takes place Mondays from noon to one at CHS.

Educational Objectives:

  • Understand the role of primary care physician in sports medicine, and as team physician and develop clinical competency in the overall field of sports medicine dealing primarily with a university-age population
  • Emphasize the following in the context of exercise and sports participation: anatomy, biomechanics, patho-physiology of illness and injury, psychology, medico-legal, ethics, pharmacology, supplements and performance enhancing drugs, nutrition Cultivate and refine clinical competency in sports medicine including cognitive knowledge, interpersonal and psychomotor skills, professional attitude and practice management
  • Understand prevention and rehabilitation strategies for disease
  • Understand indications for and interpretation of diagnostic imaging in sports medicine
  • Understand the indications for referral to specialists (e.g. orthopedists, neurosurgeons and physical therapy)
  • Understand sprain, strain, dislocation and fracture management including injections, aspirations and application of braces and casting
  • Understand fitness evaluation and pre-participation exams for athletic try-outs, and participation in academic programs
  • Understand the interrelationship between exercise and sport and chronic disease and special considerations such as age, gender, ethnicity and disability
  • Understand the knowledge and application of clinical return to play guidelines
  • Recognize and manage the rare but life threatening sports injuries

Resident Responsibilities:

  • The resident will report to and be supervised by the UA SM Fellowship Director and Associate Directors.
  • Schedule and oversight of rotation evaluation will be by the UA SM Fellowship Director and Associate Directors.
  • The rotation will be offered during above listed with months, but needs pre-authorization by the UA SM Fellowship Director and Associate Directors.
  • The rotation is open to second or third year residents in good standing from the Department Emergency Medicine and approved by the Emergency Department Residency Director.
  • The resident will be scheduled to continue to participate in the Emergency Department Continuing Education Lectures
  • Compliance with the Duty Hours Rules will be stressed. Moonlighting must be pre-approved from the ED Residency Director and the UAPCSM Fellowship Director.

Assessment will be through faculty evaluation, including feedback on knowledge base, event planning, and technical skill.
