READ: Philippians 2: 3-11
3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,4not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.5In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6Who, being in very natureGod,did not consider equality with Godsomething to be used to his own advantage;7rather, he made himself nothingby taking the very natureof a servant, being made in human likeness.8And being found in appearance as a man,he humbled himselfby becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!
9Therefore God exalted himto the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,to the glory of God the Father.
DISCUSS:
- What did humility look like for Jesus? becoming human, being obedient to God by dying on the cross (v. 7, 8)
- What does humility look like for us? serving those around us, being willing to let go of our own preferences (v. 3, 4), being obedient to God and following Him (v. 8)
- Does being humble mean that we are worth less than those around us? no – Jesus didn’t pretend that He wasn’t God in order to be humble. He just continued to care about those around Him (v. 6, 7). “Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less.” – C.S. Lewis
LOL Takeaway:
If Jesus Christ is our example, our goal is to be like Him in everything – including humility. We can’t love the people around us well if we love ourselves more. How can we live out humility today? Ask God to reveal points of pride in your life and teach you how to be humble, just like Jesus.
Closing Prayer:
God, we thank You for Jesus’s humility and the fact that it led Him to the cross to die and rise again, defeating death and covering our sins. Would you please teach us to be like You? Please show us where pride is keeping us from loving Your children well, and reveal to us what humility looks like there. Lord, would You bless us and help us and make us thankful today? In the name of Jesus our example we pray these things, Amen.
