Maineand the SAT – A Partnership for Student Success

Connecting Maine Students to the Opportunities They Have Earned.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

In addition to providing the most clear, focused, and useful College Entrance Exam to all 3rd year high school students across the state of Mainefor free, the administration of the SAT helps ensure that students and their families are connectedtokey opportunities available to them. The College Board, the provider of the SAT, gives students and families complete discretion as to the additional information they disclose, including registering for the SAT or saving college lists. We ask students for personal information to help them make choices about their future.

You have an important role in this decision and we need your consent before your child fillsout their SAT Questionnaire. Students will be asked to provide information about their grades, interests, intended major, college plans, and other things. Students don’t have to answer all of the questions. If you fill out the questionnaire and opt into Student Search Service®, participating colleges and scholarship organizations that are looking for students like you will be better able to find you.

Students can also complete the questionnaire and opt-out of Student Search Service. This will allow the College Board and other independent researchers to use the data to help maintain the validity of the SAT in college admissions for future students. You can opt-in on the survey and then opt out at any time by going to your account on the College Board web site.

Institutions that receive student SAT scores and related data are required to maintain confidentiality of data and to adhere to College Board guidelines for using information.

Connecting Maine Students to the Opportunities They Have Earned.

When students fill out their SAT Questionnaire, they can voluntarily opt in to Student Search Service®-an important step on their road to college and career success. Students may opt out of this service at any time.By opting in to Student Search Service, students can expect to receive emails and postal mail from colleges across the state and country or from around the world. Colleges will receive a student’s name related to score range information, but exact scores will not be reported. The colleges may send the students:

-Information on financial aid, scholarships, or other ways to make college more affordable.

-Details on campus life and students services.

-Overviews of majors, courses, and degree options

The College Board will only share data with eligible colleges, universities, scholarship and educational opportunity programs that have signed a license agreement, and consistently monitors their use of student information for compliance.

Student scores are only provided to higher education institutions and scholarship organizations that are selected by the students to inform the admissions and financial aids processes. Student Search Service does not share student scores.

Based on students’ information collected through the administration of the SAT, the College Board helps students navigate the college planning, application, and financial aid processes. The College Board’s Access to Opportunity program uses the student data to identify high-achieving and low-income students, and provides them with the following resources that are designed to propel them forward into the opportunities they have earned:

-State and national scholarships, awards, and recognition opportunities.

-Qualified students and their respective educators receive information packets, including guidance on the college application process and fee waivers.

Students’ overall performance data (not personally identifiable) are used in creating district, state, and national trend reports to inform policy, strategy, and operational decisions.

By participating in the SAT School Day program offered across the state this spring, your child(ren) takes a very important step in accessing a host of educational opportunities.

P.S. We always encourage parents and guardians to get involved in their child’s educational choices. One way you can do this is to take part in the College Board’s “CC: a parent” service, which allows a parent or guardian to receive copies of emails that their child requests to receive. If students provide a parent’s name and email address, that parent will receive an email from the College Board asking if they want to receive copies of the emails that their student receives.
