Your son/daughter is preparing to compete in the DECA District Conference on January 12, 2018 at
Eastern Michigan University.
The purpose of this informational letter is to answer questions about the conference such as transportation, costs involved, etc. as well as to ensure that we have parent/guardian signatures on all necessary documents.
Transportation/Time:
Please plan to meet at the front of the school building at 7:30am on Thursday, January 12. The bus will be leaving at 7:45am sharp! We should return from the conference by 4:00pm.
Transportation to and from the conference will be by bus. All activities will be held at Eastern Michigan University. Should it become necessary for a student to leave the conference, special arrangements will be made through the advisor, principal and parent.
Cost:
The cost per student will be $30.00 for this conference. This fee will cover registration, awards, transportation, conference materials and lunch. This money is due by November 14, 2017.
Code of Conduct:
All school rules apply at the conference and any violation will be dealt with accordingly. Michigan DECA’s Code of Conduct rules will also apply. Please sign the attached Code of Conduct and School Permission Slip and return the forms by: January 10, 2018. Students will not be able to participate at the District Conference without these signed documents.
How to Dress:
Attached is the Michigan DECA dress code. Students should be dressed as office professionals: dress shoes and hosiery should be worn, young men must wear a collared shirt and necktie, young women may wear slacks, suits, or skirts and dresses, but they must be at least finger-tip length and have covered arms and shoulders. Students may not wear blue jeans or any denim material, athletic shoes, hats, sleeveless shirts, casual shirts, open-toe shoes or shoes without socks or stockings.
What to Bring:
A pencil, a black or blue ink pen, and a basic function calculator. You CANNOT use the calculator function on your cellphone, or other smart device. Using any of these electronic devices during prep time, waiting for the judges or during competition will result in disqualification! You also cannot bring any notes/notebooks, workbooks or handouts with you into your prep time or competition. You may also want to bring a deck of cards to help pass the time between lunch and the Awards Ceremony.
What to Expect:
When we arrive, we will register together and students will then be seated at the opening session as a chapter. There will be a welcome speech, and then delegates will be directed to a holding room where they will prepare to do their role-play. Each student will participate in one role-play. After the role-play, we will break for lunch. The Closing Awards Session will follow (parents may attend!) and we will find out who qualifies to go to the State Conference, held March 9-11, 2018 in downtown Detroit, Michigan.
State Conference Notes/Planning Ahead:
If you qualify for the State Conference, please make note of the following:
· The State Conference will be held in downtown Detroit, Michigan on March 9-11, 2018.
· The costs for the weekend will be around $250.00 per participant which will include lodging, registration, transportation and some meals during the three-day event. You will need to pay $100.00 by January 30, 2018. Students will need to bring additional spending money for some meals.
Again, please review the attached dress code when deciding what business attire to wear for the conference and do not forget to sign the attached Code of Conduct and School Permission Slip and return by: January 10, 2018.
