Out-of-Hours Working Permission Form

This form is to be filled in by the academic supervisor, detailing which activities the named student is allowed to carry out ‘Out-of-Hours’ and whether Lone Working ‘Out-of-Hours’ is allowed and must include any restrictions / limitations imposed.

The “PAIR’S RULE” applies to Out-of-Hours working in the School of Materials.

Out-of-hours working for researchers is defined as any time before 7.30 am and after 5.00 p.m. (1700 hours – generally when front door is locked) Monday to Friday, 7.30 am to 11pm Saturday and Sunday and public holidays and between Boxing Day and New Years Day. Working between the hours of 11 p.m. (2300 hours) and 7.30 a.m. is not allowed without additional express permission from the supervisor and the Safety Advisor and is termed ‘night-time working’ – lone working is not permitted during this ‘night-time working’ period.

Only low hazard activities are allowed ‘Out-of-hours’. The Safety assessments for ‘Out-of-hours’ activities must indicate any addition restrictions / limitations to ensure safety must be made clear on the Risk Assessment to cover Out-of-Hours and possible Lone Working. Working in pairs should be encouraged for lab based activities where possible.

All activities must be covered by valid Risk Assessments and any other additional safety assessments.

Students should be reminded not to allow anyone in to the building and to report immediately to security any and all transgressions as well as any strangers they may meet during ‘Out-of-hours’ working.
