SOCIOLINGUISTICS –UPDATED SYLLABUS
Dr. Teresa Fernández Ulloa
Students should have taken previously Spanish 412 (Spanish Linguistics) or a similar Linguistics course.
Book:
Francisco Moreno Fernández: Principios de sociolingüística y sociología del lenguaje, Barcelona, Ariel, 1998.
There are several linguistics dictionaries at the Library.
Grade:
There will 2 exams and the final. Each of them will count 35% of the total grade. (70%).
The exercises at the end of each chapter are to be turned in the day of each exam. This will count 30%. The instructor will include in this syllabus the exercises that you need to do, and any extra reading that you need to prepare.
This is a hybrid course. Classes will meet on Tuesdays generally (check class schedule bellow). Thursdays are for the students to read the materials and do the exercises. Students should bring the chapter prepared with questions to ask every day. Not coming to class one day does not meet a free day, it means a day to work on your readings and exercises. We may need to come on Thursdays some time; it will be announced in the class.
Bear in mind that you should come to the classes, where concepts will be explained. Your instructor will prepare review questions for each lesson. Some extra readings may be required.
We will use WebCT.
