Instructions

You have been randomly assigned to debate one side of the issue listed above your name. You are required to work in groups of 2-3 (depending upon the day and topic) to develop a 15 minute research-based presentation for the class in support of your position on the topic assigned.

Following these presentations, each side will be given the opportunity for rebuttal, so be prepared with specific points and possible counter-points to your position. Each side will be given a 2-minute rebuttal. If time permits, questions from the audience will be entertained. Each teammember will receive the same grade for the presentation unless there has been an uneven division of labor within the team. This must be demonstrated, in writing, by members of the team.

EACH GROUP MUST HAND IN ONE DETAILED OUTLINE AND A LIST OF REFERENCES FOR THEIR PRESENTATION. You must use no less than 5 academic sources to support your position. These materials are due in class on the assigned debate date. Late assignments will receive an automatic deduction of 20% of total possible points.

I will give you a few minutes at the end of class today to exchange email addresses/phone numbers with those in your group in order to set up meetings outside the classroom.

Grading Rubric (50 pts.)

The content and style of each debate will be evaluated using criteria listed below:

1) Demonstration of knowledge of topic through use of academic sources, as illustrated in

presentation and references: (20 points)
2) Organization of presentation/group outline: (10 points)
3) Effectiveness of rebuttal(s): (10 points)

4) Cumulative audience reaction to debate (10 points)

This will be measured by surveying students’ responses to teams’ effectiveness.

An average score (0-10 points) will be calculated.

*NOTE:

This is a verbal demonstration; no use of technological tools (e.g. powerpoint).

If you are unable to work with your team member for whatever reason, contact me as soon as possible.
