Key question 1: How good are outcomes?

KQ 1 – Outcomes 1.1.1Results and trends in performance compared with national averages, similar providers and prior attainment / Evidence
Outcomes are good against external benchmarking data for Key Stage 2. Performance in Foundation Phase is generally on an upward trend. . Achievement and attainment have improved well due to attention to detail with tracking pupil outcomes at class; group and individual pupil level. This has been supported by more specific and targeted interventions.

Targets set and progress - Individual targets for pupils were nearly all met or exceeded. Value added tracking across the phases is good

Performance in the Foundation Phase Indicator: Darran Park Primary’s performance in this area has shown an improving trend over the last four years. It had consistently been below the national, local and family average during this period; however this year performance is above LA and national averages but slightly below Family averages.
Performance in LLC, MD and PSWCD at Outcome 5 and above: The performance in PSWCD had generally improved over the last five years; with performance in 2016 being the only year where it has dropped (three of the pupils from this year’s cohort were from the LRB). There has been an upward trend in LLC over the last four years. In MD, the trend has been more variable over the last four years; however this year shows an improvement in performance. All three areas have been consistently below the national, local and family averages for the previous four years; however this year performance in LLC is above LA and National averages, but below Family averages. In MD, performance is in line with LA and National but slightly below Family averages whereas PSWCD remains below family, LA and national averages.
Performance in LLC, MD and PSWCD at Outcome 6 and above: There had consistently been an upward trend in performance in PSWCD for the last five years; however performance has dropped for the first time this year. In LLC and MD the trend in performance had been variable over the last five years; however performance in these areas has dropped for the last two years. The school performed below the family, local and national averages in all three areas. The performance in the 3 areas has generally been below national, local and family averages for the last four years, aside from PSWCD (2016) being above All wales and Local averages; PSWCD (2015) being above Family averages and MD (2015), LLC (2014) and MD (2013) being above local averages.
Achievement below Outcome 5: 5 pupils did not achieve the FPI. 2 pupils did not achieve Outcome 5 in LLC , MD and PSWCD (1 of these pupils was in the LRB and one of the pupils has EAL and complex learning needs and has been receiving further support in the LRB for Literacy and Numeracy). 2 pupils did not achieve Outcome 5 in LLC and MD (both of these pupils only joined the school at the beginning of Year 2 and both were on the SEN register with a range of different learning needs). Also, one pupil did not achieve Outcome 5 in PSWCD; however this pupil has a diagnosis of ASD. All of these pupils met the challenging targets set.
The school’s 3-year average for FSM is 22.4% and remains in the 16%-24% band, which the school has generally been in over the last five years, with the only exception being in 2014 when the school moved into the 24%-32% band.

The school’s performance with regard to quartile position has remained in Quartiles 3 and 4 for the last 5 years in LLC, MD, PSWCD and the FPI.

The performance at Outcome 6 has mostly placed the school in Quartiles 3 and 4; however there has been three occasions where performance has placed the school in Quartile 2: PSWCD in 2016; LLC in 2014 and MD in 2013.
Standards of other Areas of learning not directly referenced in KQ1: Overall standards of pupils’ Creative Development and Knowledge and Understanding of the World are Good, whereas standards in Physical Development have been very good. This has improved due to the work carried out through a focused multiskills approach.

Performance in the Foundation Phase Indicator: Darran Park Primary’s performance in this area had shown an improving trend for the three years; however this year’s performance is lower than the previous year. The school’s performance had been below local, family and national averages in 2014 and 2015, having previously been above local and in line with national averages during the previous year. Performance had been consistently below family averages during this three year period. However in 2016 performance was above Family, National and local averages, with the school ranked 1st in the family in 2016. In 2017, performance is once again above LA and National averages and is in line with family averages
Performance in LLC, MD and PSWCD at Outcome 5 and above: The school’s performance in all of these areas had consistently improved for the last five years, with 2017 being the first time during this period where performance has dropped slightly from the previous year. In MD, performance has been above local and national averages for the last five years and above family averages for two out of last three years. The school is in line with the family average this year and is ranked 6th in the family. In PSWCD performance had been above local, national and family averages for three years, however this year performance remains above local and national averages but is slightly below family averages. The school was ranked 8th amongst the family of schools in 2017. In LLC, the school’s performance is above family averages for the second year in succession. Performance is also above local and national averages for the third year running. In the previous two years performance has generally been below local, national and family averages aside from in 2014, when performance was above local averages. The school is ranked 5th in the family.

In LLC and MD, the trend in performance has been variable over the last five years. Performance in LLC is below local, family and national averages which have been the trend for four out of the last five years. In 2014, the school’s performance was above local and national averages and slightly below family averages. The school is ranked 10th in the family. In MD Performance was below LA, National and Family averages for the second year in succession. Performance in 2015 was above LA, in line with national and slightly below family averages. Performance was also higher than local averages in 2013; however it has generally been below family and national averages. In PSWCD, performance was below family, local and national averages having previously being above family and local averages in 2015 and 2016 and also above national averages in 2016, having previously been below national averages in 2015. For the two years prior to 2015 it had generally been below local, family and national averages. The school is ranked 10th in the family for MD and 10th in the family for PSWCD

The school’s performance with regard to quartile positions has remained consistent in 2017 compared to the previous four years in PSWCD and MD. During these years, the school has been in quartile 2 for MD and quartile 3 for PSWCD. The school performance places the school in Quartile 2 for LLC and the FPI having been in Quartile 1 the previous year. Prior to this the school had previously been in quartiles 3 and 4 in these two areas for the previous three years.

Key Stage Two
Targets set and progress - Individual targets for pupils in each of the KS2 classes were nearly all met or exceeded and pupils make good progress from the Foundation Phase to the end of Key Stage 2. This is at a similar or better rate of progress than the family LA, and Wales. This is a result of robust and challenging target setting, half-termly tracking and the early identification of support often through short burst, well-run interventions. See 2.2
Performance of the Core Subject Indicator: The School’s performance has shown an upward trend over the last five years with 2013 being the only year where performance was weaker than the previous year. This was due to nearly 40% of the cohort being on the SEN register, the most significant number during this 5 year period. Performance in the CSI has been above the national, local and family averages for the last four years and was below these averages in 2013. The school was ranked 4th amongst the family of schools in 2017.
Performance in English, Mathematics and Science at Level 4 and above: Performance in all three subjects has generally shown an improving trend over the last 5 years. Performance in all three core subjects is above local and national averages, but in line with family averages for Mathematics and slightly below English and Science family averages. There were strong performances during the last four years in all subjects. In English and Mathematics school performance was above the national, family and local averages in 2014, 2015 and 2016, but generally below these averages in 2013 (performance in Maths was above local averages). Performance in all three core subjects has generally placed the school in Quartiles 1 and 2 during the last four years, aside from Science being in Quartile 3 in 2015 and 2016. The school is ranked 8th in the family for English, 7th in the family for Mathematics and 8th in the family for Science.
Performance in English, mathematics and Science at Level 5 and above: The performance in English, Mathematics and Science at Level 5+ has been variable over the last five years. Performance in English is higher than the previous year’s performance but is slightly lower than local, family and national averages, which was similar to 2016. However, it is the school’s second highest performance during the last five years. In 2015 performance in English was above the family, local and national averages. In 2014, there had been a significant increase in performance from the previous year, and results were above local averages but slightly below family and national averages. The school is ranked 7th in its family for English. In Mathematics, performance is above LA and National averages but slightly lower than Family averages. In 2015 performance was above local, family and national averages, although in 2013, 2014 and 2016 performance has been below these averages. Performance has generally shown an improving trend over the last five years, aside from in 2016 where performance was lower than the previous year. The school is ranked 8th in its family for Mathematics. Performance in Science has been variable over the last five year’s. This year’s performance is in line with the local averages but below the family and national averages. During the previous two year’s performance was above local, family and national averages. The school was ranked 8th amongst the family in 2017 for Science
Achievement below Level 4: Of the 3 pupils in English, Mathematics Science who did not achieve Level 4, all of them were on the SEN register with challenging learning difficulties, one pupil with a statement and the two other pupils at SA+
Trends in Reading, Writing and Mathematics: Performance in reading, writing and mathematics has generally shown an improving trend over the last five years. 90.2% of pupils achieved a level 4 in combination of all three aspects which is above family, national and local averages. The performance in two of the areas is identical, with 92.2% of pupils achieving a Level 4 in reading and writing. The strongest of the three aspects is maths at 94.1. Performance at Level 5 for Mathematics is the highest of the three areas and is above local and national levels and in line with family averages. Performance in writing and reading at Level 5 are slightly below local, national and family averages.
