Spotlight on CTE

Lakewood Career Academy teacher helps launch career program - The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) officially launched the Jobs for Washington's Graduates (JWG) program, a chapter of the National Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) Dropout prevention program at the Museum of Flight on Oct. 21, 2011, in front of more than 200 attendees.

Kitti Wheeler, a business education teacher and JAG specialist from Lakewood Career Academy, was an honored speaker. Wheeler spoke about the program and the students who have progressed to successful futures.
"Ten of my 15 students have transitioned from Lakewood Career Academy to Clover Park Technical College and are attending courses in retail business management, culinary arts, cosmetology and pre-pharmacy technician programs," said Wheeler. "Three of them are in the nursing program and the others are on track to transition to college and careers."
Randy Dorn, superintendent of public instruction; Jay Inslee, congressman; Ken Smith, JAG chief executive officer; Anthony Salcito, vice president of worldwide education for Microsoft and several state legislators were also in attendance and spoke. The JAG Program is more than 30-years-old and has chapters in 33 states. The program focuses on career and educational advancement, while also providing care for students to graduate. In Washington, 35 high schools and skill centers host JWG programs.
"It takes a special person to be a JAG Specialist," said Debra Shanafelt, director of Career and Technical Education for Clover Park School District. "Kitti's message and presentation painted a picture of how successful students can be when special attention is paid to the reduction of the barriers in their lives."

DO-IT is actively recruiting students for their capstone program, DO-IT Scholars
For this unique program we are seeking students who
* are sophomores or juniors in high school in Washington state;
* have an aptitude for and interest in attending college;
* have a disability such as a mobility impairment, learning disability, sensory impairment, or health impairment; and
* are interested in interactions with other students with disabilities.
DO-IT Scholars are loaned computer equipment and adaptive technology needed to participate in electronic mentoring and Internet support year-round. For up to three summers, DO-IT Scholars attend a 1-2 week, live-in summer program on the University of Washington Seattle campus, where they learn about college selection, challenging careers, self-advocacy, and adaptive technology. Students are encouraged to apply by January 10, 2012, but enrollment continues until all positions are filled.
You may contact DO-IT to request application materials at 206-685-3648 (voice/TTY) or download forms at:
http://www.uw.edu/doit/Programs/scholar.html.
DO-IT (Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology) serves to increase the participation of individuals with disabilities in challenging academic programs and careers. It is directed by Sheryl Burgstahler, PhD.
