How ANS Student Sections Benefit Utilities
What is a Student Section?
American Nuclear Society (ANS) Student Sections are groups of students, usually at a specific college or university, with interests in nuclear science and technology. In one case, the Excelsior College Student Section, the students meet via internet, as the college is a distance learning institution. The individuals come together to form a group that furthers the objectives of the American Nuclear Society. Those objectives lead the groups to:
* promote the advancement of science and engineering
* hold meetings for presentation and discussion of scientific and technical papers
* prepare and disseminate information about nuclear science and technology
* cooperate with agencies, institutions and organizations having similar purposes
What do Student Sections do?
Student Sections schedule periodic meetings where members and guests hear presentations on a variety of topics:
* technical information and other professional topics
* new programs or governmental policies impacting nuclear science and technology
* diverse applications of nuclear science and technology
Student Sections also plan outreach into the community. These activities can be as diverse as:
* sponsoring teacher workshops or making classroom visits
* sponsoring an information booth at a community event
* talking to local service clubs and organizations
* making university students aware of nuclear career opportunities
How does this help me as a utility manager?

* expand the technical/professional knowledge of potential new employees
* provide a way for your company to catch the attention of engineers in training
* provide residents in your area with positive information about nuclear science and technology from people a group not affiliated with the utility
