DICKINSON HIGH SCHOOL AFJROTC SYLLABUS 2016 1st SEMESTER

COURSE NAME: LEADERSHIP EDUCATION 200: COMMUNICATION, AWARENESS, AND LEADERSHIP

REQUIRED TEXT: Leadership Education 2: Communication, Awareness, and Leadership Textbook, Copyright 2006.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The LE-200 course will be taught on Tuesdays of each week, unless Tuesday happens to be the first school day of the week, in which case D&C will be conducted instead of LE.

LE-200 has four units, plus one element from LE-100. In LE-100 “Chapter 1: Introduction to JROTC Programs” introduces students (cadets) into Air Force Junior ROTC. It begins with the history, organization, mission, goals, and objectives of AFJROTC. Next follows the military uniform and appearance standards and the grooming standards for male and female cadets. The remainder of Chapter 1 includes customs and courtesies for AFJROTC; you will learn about saluting properly, recognizing rank, and using military titles. Discipline (including drill) and respect are vital parts of the Air Force and AFJROTC.

In LE-200, “Unit One: Learning, Communication, and Personal Development” shows cadets the need to know how to learn and how to communicate. If learning is to take place, cadets must learn to communicate well. Understanding the foundations of communication will prepare cadets to listen to others, think critically, write and speak effectively, and apply what they’ve learned to their personal development.

Units Two, Three, and Four will be covered during the Spring Semester.

COURSE NAME: AEROSPACE SCIENCE 300: EXPLORING SPACE: THE HIGH FRONTIER

REQUIRED TEXTS: Exploring Space: The High Frontier (2010).

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Aerospace Science 300 (AS-300) course will be taught on Wednesdays and Thursdays of each week. Exploring Space: The High Frontier is the third-year science course in the high school sequence of Aerospace Science courses for AFJROTC. This course begins with the early ideas of the heavens, through the Renaissance, and on into modern astronomy. It provides an in-depth study of the Earth, Sun, stars, Moon, and Solar System, including the terrestrial and the outer planets. It discusses issues critical to travel in the upper atmosphere—such as orbits and trajectories—unmanned satellites, and space probes. It investigates the importance of entering space and discusses manned and unmanned missions, focusing on concepts surrounding spaceflight, space vehicles, launch systems, and safety. This course is intended as a course in space and basic spaceflight for young high school students and to complement materials taught in math, physics, and other science-related courses and is aligned with the National Science Education Standards, the Math Standards and Expectations, and ISTE National Educational Technology Standards for Students. This course has four units, each divided into chapters that contain a number of lessons.

“Unit 1: The Space Environment” discusses the vastness of the galaxy and the universe. It discusses Galileo, the telescope, Newton’s Laws of Motion, and Einstein’s theories and relativity. It explains the special characteristics of the Earth and Moon, theories of the Solar System’s formation and discusses the planets, comets, and asteroids. Finally, it looks at the Milky Way Galaxy and what lies beyond it—our position in the Milky Way, other galaxies, and black holes.

“Unit 2: Exploring Space” looks at why humans should explore space and reviews the challenges of entering space. It examines the historical benefits of space exploration and the physical and psychological effects of spaceflight on humans.

“Unit 3: Manned and Unmanned Spaceflight” and “Unit 4: Space Technology” will be covered during the 2nd Semester.

UNIT 1: THE SPACE ENVIRONMENT

CHAPTER 1: THE HISTORY OF ASTRONOMY

Lesson 1: Prehistoric and Classical Astronomy

Lesson 2: Astronomy and the Renaissance

Lesson 3: The Enlightenment and Modern Astronomy

CHAPTER 2: THE EARTH AND MOON

Lesson 1: Earth, Inside and Out

Lesson 2: The Moon: Earth’s Fellow Traveler

CHAPTER 3: THE SUN AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM

Lesson 1: The Sun and Its Domain

Lesson 2: The Terrestrial Planets

Lesson 3: The Outer Planets

Lesson 4: Dwarf Planets, Comets, Asteroids, and Kuiper Belt Objects

MIDTERM EXAM: The 1st Semester Midterm Exam will cover all of the Aerospace Science and Leadership Education material covered this semester. On the Semester Final Exam, “Leadership Education” will account for approximately 45% of the questions, “Drill and Ceremonies” will account for approximately 5% of the questions, and “Aerospace Science” will account for approximately 50% of the questions.

COURSE NAME: CADET HEALTH AND WELLNESS PROGRAM (CHAWP)

REQUIRED TEXT: None

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Wellness is an official part of the AFJROTC program. It is an exercise program focused upon individual base line improvements with the goal of achieving a national standard as calculated with age and gender. CHAWP will include other activities cadets enjoy such as team sports in order to keep the Wellness Program fun and motivating. The Wellness Program is a 40-week program modifiable to meet individual goals. Personal improvement will be rewarded. The Cadet Health and Wellness Program is comprised of 18 exercises which can develop all muscle groups and provide sufficient anaerobic and aerobic intensity.

COURSE OBJECTIVE: Motivating cadets to lead active, healthy lifestyles beyond program requirements and into their adult lives.

GOALS OF THE WELLNESS PROGRAM:

1. Create an individualized training program based on national standards by age and gender.

2. Identify areas of improvement for each cadet.

3. Incorporate a physical training program to reach goals.

CHAWP’s EXERCISES:

TYPICAL EXERCISE CLASS:

● Warm-up/Stretch

● Conduct 3 or more exercises to perform depending on time

● Ensure proper form and technique

● Students will strive to complete the number of repetitions or time allotted for each exercise

● Cool-down/Stretch

PHYSICAL TRAINING DAY: Cadets will be issued an AFJROTC Physical Fitness Uniform (PTU) at the beginning of the school year. PTU items will be worn only as designated by the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (usually on Fridays). AFJROTC cadets are responsible for the weekly cleanliness/maintenance of these uniform items. Lost or damaged PTUs are the cadet’s financial responsibility for replacement. Cadets must wear the complete AFJROTC PTU in order to participate in CHAWP activities.

CHAWP GRADING PROCEDURES: CHAWP participation counts for 100 points per week. Full points will be awarded for actively participating in that day’s activities with a cheerful attitude.

REWARDS: All cadets that fully participate in the CHAWP for the entire school year will receive the Health and Wellness Ribbon. Those excelling in the Presidential Physical Fitness Test (administered at the beginning and end of the year) will be awarded another Health and Wellness Ribbon with a star device based upon your overall Percentile Score:

Bronze Star – Percentile Score of 75 – 84

Silver Star – Percentile Score of 85 – 94

Gold Star – Percentile Score of 95 – 100

CONSEQUENCES: Cadets may lose participation points for failing to participate, unless excused by medical personnel. Participation points will be deducted (generally in groups of 25) for failure or unwillingness to participate, or for poor effort or attitude. Obviously, not wearing the official AFJROTC uniform shirt, shorts (or sweat pants), and appropriate athletic shoes will result in a zero (0%) for participation.

MAKEUP ASSIGNMENTS: There is no makeup for CHAWP. Cadets will not lose weekly participation points for any excused absence.

GRADING SCALE USED AT DICKINSON HIGH SCHOOL:

Grade Percentage Required

A 90 - 100

B 80 - 89

C 70 - 79

F 69 and below
