NCOIL International issues Task ForcE TO HOLD JUNE 17 CALL,

DECIDE ON PROPOSED “TOP ISSUES” PRIOR TO SUMMER MEETING

Troy, New York, June 6, 2014 – The NCOIL International Issues Task Force will meet on Tuesday, June 17, to explore interested-party suggestions for the group’s 2014 “top issues”—and will move forward with creating targeted working groups on the issues that legislators deem to be most urgent. The June 17 discussion, scheduled from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (EDT), will lay the foundation for action at a July 10 Task Force session during the NCOIL Summer Meeting in Boston.

According to NCOIL President and Task Force Chair Sen. Neil Breslin (NY):

The Task Force is taking its next step to identify the most crucial international

issues that threaten U.S. insurance regulation, to develop strategy, and to move

forward with our partners—state officials and consumer and industry

representatives, among others—to ensure that nothing injures the state regulation

that protects consumers and promotes healthy insurance markets. We are setting

course for one of the most critical initiatives on which NCOIL, collaborating with

other advocates of state oversight, has ever embarked.

The June 17 call, Sen. Breslin said, will allow Task Force legislators to dialogue with members of their State Official Working Group and their Advisory Council and to seek common ground on what the Task Force should pursue this year. He noted that:

Once the Task Force decides what issues are most urgent, we’ll charge each

working group with laying out an approach that could maximize our impact on

global insurance discussions—since, to be most effective, we need to zero in

on the concerns that warrant our immediate attention. A much-anticipated,

in-person meeting on July 10 will be the forum for considering and finalizing

our strategies.

Interested-party “top issue” recommendations were culled from a larger list of concerns identified at the March NCOIL Spring Meeting. Entities that submitted recommendations for highest-priority Task Force issues included:

·  American Academy of Actuaries (AAA)

·  American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI)/Attachments One, Two, Three, Four

·  Assoc. of Bermuda Insurers & Reinsurers (ABIR)/Reinsurance Assoc. of America (RAA)

·  Birny Birnbaum

·  Genworth

·  Sonja Larkin-Thorne

·  National Assoc. of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC)

·  Property-Casualty Insurers Assoc. of America (PCI)

·  State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company

The Thursday, July 10, Task Force meeting will take place from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. at the NCOIL Summer Meeting, to be held at the Boston Park Plaza.

NCOIL is an organization of state legislators whose main area of public policy interest is insurance legislation and regulation.
