SERGEANT-AT-ARMS

Robert Gwas the Sgt this AM and queried the origin of the Sgt’s brown box. Dave L glad to be back from Edmonton. Vojto looking for a fishing rod. Sucha noted how respected Rotary was (is). Doug S going away. Harry (and Barry) noted that it was nice have a full house this AM. Mike W advised that the VIU Festival of Trees is coming up. He’s also going to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games next July. Brian R had his worst game of golf, ever. Several “Rider-green” loonies. Don W was the big winner!

Presidential Observations

President Glynn said he’d been busy with Rotary over the past week: Youth Protection Officer training seminar, Clubrunner training session, Board meeting, etc.

Tip of the Presidential Hat to Dawne Negrin, a newer Rotarian, who jumped right into the Youth Exchange Program and is taking the lead. We very much appreciate the work Dawne has done, for Youth Exchange in Nanaimo/Lantzville, in such a short time.

New challenge! If we can recruit 5 new members to the Club before December 31st, Glynn will shave off his 40-year old mustache.

Rotary Minute – TRF

Dawne Negrin talked about her career(s).

First, she was a Flight Attendant with Air Canada, which was enjoyable in the “good old days”.

…Then, taught kindergarten classes – eventually opening her own kindergarten school.

Then, raised a family of 7 children (including 5 girls), now extended to include 3 grandchildren.

Then, the next emptied and Dawne developed a business case for wedding dress consignments which led to the opening of the White Bridal Boutique in Lantzville a couple of years ago.

Long Lake Community Boathouse Project

This is a community project, sponsored jointly by the Nanaimo Canoe and Kayak Club and the Nanaimo Rowing Club, that will bring everyone together through the life time sport of canoe kayak and rowing!

It is a large and ambitious project that has been dream for the two clubs that call Long Lake home. Canoe kayak (paddling) and rowing have been growing in popularity with the local youth in the last few years. Giving them an after school meeting place while having fun getting active! With all this fun and activity creates growing pains and while meeting demands for purchasing more equipment and adding times to get on the water to train is relatively easy, finding a place to keep the equipment and extra bodies is the challenge.

This community boathouse project is a dream to bring people of all ages to the water side and paddle.A new building will help us by improving our surroundings for our youth summer camps, outreach programs, schools programs, youth and adult programs, open houses and regattas by providing a safer environment. It will also give everyone a place to be around friends while enjoying the outdoors.

For a long time the two clubs have been working out of a small cinder block building and a truck trailer. This small and cozy place we have called home for over 20 years is falling apart. That is why they are working together to build a larger safer building to call home. This building will have new public washrooms that will be open all year round. It will make Loudon Park a more welcoming place. There will also be a meeting room available for public gatherings of all kinds and space for both clubs to house all boats and equipment safely and securely.

The most important part will be the space that will allow both clubs to grow their community youth programs!

ONE FINAL THOUGHT

“People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.” – Dale Carnegie (Writer & Lecturer, 1888 – 1955)

One word says it all:

HOPE

The Final Word – Monday, November 11th is Remembrance Day. Why not come out to a Remembrance Day Service near you.
