Thank you for your willingness to serve on Dane County commissions and committees. The work of these organizations is quite varied but is always important. In some cases, these commissions offer grant opportunities (e.g., Cultural Affairs or the Environmental Council), have regulatory responsibilities (e.g. Lakes & Watershed Commission), some of a little of everything (Parks Commission), and in every case have serious advisory duties (e.g., the Human Services Board). They also offer the opportunity for Supervisors and citizens to work together on some of our most pressing challenges or exciting opportunities.
I tried as much as possible to accommodate your preferences. In some cases, that was impossible because there were not enough slots available on a particular committee or because there were specific geographical or representational requirements. As is always the case, one complicating factor is the high popularity of just a couple of commissions and the relative lack of interest in others. As examples, 9 supervisors requested the Airport Commission, 6 the Cultural Affairs Commission, and 9 the Lakes & Watershed Commission. Nevertheless, most of you will be serving on the committees and commissions you are most interested in. Of 37 Supervisors, 32 expressed preferences for different committees. Of these, 17 received their first choice and 4 their second choice. Seven received their third or fourth choice. The list of appointments is attached.
I also respectfully request that the County Board review the membership of the Solid Waste & Recycling Advisory Commission. Because of mergers, accomplished and pending, of the County Highway and Public Works Departments and the City and County Health Departments and changes in their oversight committees, the pool of Supervisors available for appointment is not as large as it once was. Because of that, I could not accommodate the requests of two Board Members who wanted to serve on the Commission, despite a relative lack of overall interest (3 Supervisors requesting appointments with 4 available seats). I believe that the current Commission Chair, Al Matano, is working on an ordinance amendment that would permit more flexibility in appointing Supervisors to this important committee.
