RE:INTERNATIONAL PEACE DAY CELEBRATION ON MONDAY

SEPTEMBER 21, 2015

Christian greetings to you from the Uganda Joint Christian Council Secretariat. We thank the Almighty God for using you to serveGod’s people.

The United Nations declared 21st September of every year as the International Peace Day. Mbarara District was chosen by the Office of the Prime Minister of Uganda to host this year’s celebration. This year’s celebration is taking place at the back drop of the forth coming national general elections that needs the Church to stand in solidarity to pray for a very peaceful, fair and democratic election besides pertinent issues of peace in our families, schools, as well as peace in our neighbouring countries like South Sudan and Somalia, not forgetting the hostility our Christian Brothers and Sisters are facing in other parts of the world.

The International Peace Week and Day celebrations have been held since 2000. Uganda Joint Christian Council has been involved in these activities both at national and district level. For example, in 2005 the celebrations took place in Soroti, in 2006 it was in Gulu, in 2007 it was held in Kampala, in 2008 it took place in Kasese, in 2009 Arua District hosted it, in 2010 it was held in Kampala, in 2011 Kotido, 2012 it was held in Kapelabyong, 2013 it ws celebrated in Moroto and in 2014 it was held in Adjumani and UJCC has been actively involved in all these celebrations.

Uganda Joint Christian Council considers this involvement as its prime mandate to partner with the Office of the Prime Minister and other CSOs to mark this day in order to create more awareness on peace. Of special significance to note in this year’s International Peace Week/Day Celebration will be the strides made in the formulation of the Draft National Peace Building and Conflict Transformation Policy Strategy which UJCC has been a key player in.

Two activities to be undertaken by UJCC during this celebration in Mbararawill be a Public Dialogue for Religious Leaders on Peace and especially discussion and consultation on the Draft Peace Building and Conflict Transformation Policy Strategy. This will take place at tentatively………………Mbararaon the afternoon of Saturday 19thSeptember 2015 from 2:00 up to 5:00 p.m. and the Peace Vigil at the Mbarara Municipality Independence Grounds on Sunday 20th September 2015 evening from 6:00 p.m. onwards.

I therefore write to inform you of these two activities and invite you, together with four other religious leaders under your jurisdiction, to participate in both of the activities above to demonstrate that peace building is for all of us and a mandate from our Lord Jesus Christ.. Also, we would like to kindly request that in the sermons on Sunday 13th and 20th September 2015, a message about peace should be included to make all the Christians awareand mobilize them to pray for a peaceful national general elections. We also request that radio messages could be sent to the public in Mbarara centred on the celebrations and to mobilize them to participate in it.

We appreciate the great support you have always accorded and hope that your response to our humble request will be considered.
