The Western Carolinas Local Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is sponsoring an illustrated poem contest for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Contest Deadline: April 14th, 2017

Prizes: First Place ($50 gift card) and Second Place ($25 gift card) awarded in each category.

1st Place winners (in each grade category) of the Western Carolinas Local Section’s Illustrated Poem Contest will advance to the ACS National Illustrated Poem Contest for a chance to be featured on the ACS website and to win prizes!

Write and illustrate a poem using the CCED theme, “Chemistry Helps Feed the World.” Your poem must be no more than 40 words and in the following styles to be considered:

HAIKU - LIMERICK - ODE - ABC POEM - FREE VERSE - END RHYME - BLANK VERSE

The Western Carolinas section of the American Chemical Society (WCACS) is proud to participate in the ACS sponsored Chemists Celebrate Earth Day (CCED) Illustrated Poem Contest. Specific details on the contest are available here (both sides) or by directly linking to the ACS CCED site (www.acs.org/CCED). WCACS will accept up to four (4) entries per grade category per school. The grade categories, as indicated below, are K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. As an example, an elementary school with K through 5th grade students could submit a total of 8 entries: 4 entries from students in K – 2nd grade and 4 entries from students in 3rd – 5th grade. Entries must be received by April 14th, 2017 to be considered for the local and national competition. Local section volunteers will judge the submissions based on the provided criteria, select the 1st and 2nd place local winners and forward the winning entry (1st Place) in each of the four grade categories to the national competition. Cash Prizes:

In addition to selecting the top poems in each grade category to send on to the national competition, WCACS will award gift cards to the top two local entries (entries submitted from individuals residing within the Western Carolinas Local Section) for each grade category ($50 - first place / $25 – second place). The top two poems in each grade category of the national contest will receive cash awards.
