Intro - Earth Day April 22, 2015
Arleta High School has celebrated Earth Day each year since the school opened in 2006-2007 school year. The official world-wide inauguration of Earth Day was in April of 1970; 45 years of celebrating our Mother Earth! This year’s theme is “Promoting the 6-R’s” (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Return, Refuse, Rethink), conservation and preservation. The AHS Eco-League Club and Pacoima Beautiful, our non-profit community partner, urges you to learn more about how to support local foods, local sustainable businesses, local watersheds, native flora and fauna, public transportation, and more. View the power point presentation and/or attend the Assembly on Friday 24, 2015 and pledge to make a difference.
Through – Advisory Class Pledge or Individual Student Pledge
After viewing the power point presentation. Have a discussion regarding Earth Day, the California Drought and list actions students can take to practice the 6R’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Return, Refuse, Rethink. Explore the pledge ideas attached. Have students sign the pledge. Once students have completed their actions. You may award them a community contributor certificate, see attachments.
Beyond –
As an extension, students can conduct further research, begin a service learning project (see Ms. Orozco), attend the Eco-League club, or facilitate a debate in your classroom, regarding any topic related to the environment.
