FirstFlightHigh School teacher, English Department Chair Amy Powell, was announced as 2006 Outstanding English Teacher for North Carolina at the North Carolina English Teachers Association conference in Durham on October 13. Powell will be further recognized in November 2007 at the National Council of Teachers of English Conference in New York City as one of 50 state winners. Powell is also tapped as keynote speaker at next year's NCETA conference.

"I'm proud to represent our school and the other members of the NCETA," said Powell. "Anytime you go to conference, you meet with other teachers who have great ideas to share. It really invigorates me."

Powell presented a workshop at this year's NCETA conference on her interdisciplinary unit on the Harlem Renaissance, that she reports was well recieved. "I like sharing ideas to spread the love of literature, and I greatly appreciate all of the wonderful ideas I get from other North Carolina teachers, so naturally I'm excited about the opportunity to attend national conference."

Powell was nominated by FFHS colleague Elaine Lundahl. "Amy is one of the most creative teachers I have worked with. At the same time she is an unassuming leader and a generous coworker. She has taught me so much since my time in DareCounty and I can't imagine not teaching English without her advice and assistance," says Lundahl.

Powell is a member of the Dare Education Foundation and second vice president of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Delta Zeta Chapter. The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.

"I feel honored to have been selected," said Powell, "since there are so many great teachers across the state."
