Course Number 342

Frau Marialuise Collins

„Wer keine Fremdsprache spricht, kennt seine Muttersprache nicht.“

Whoever doesn’t know a foreign language doesn’t know his mother tongue.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The second year course expands the communicative skills acquired in German 1. Grammar and vocabulary are broadened; reading becomes more intensive; writing and speaking are emphasized; cultural understanding is increased. An optional trip to Germany may be offered to students completing the second year of studies.

Tests are given on designated test day; quizzes are announced a day in advance; homework checks(which count as a quiz grade) are not. A daily “blue book quiz” is given on assigned vocabulary, usually not more than twelve words a night.

Exams are given in January and June. Each exam has an oral and a written component, each of which count as ten percent of the exam grade. There are no exemptions in January in German II. Students with a 93% grade average for the year may be given the choice of an option, e.g. essay, oral interview, in lieu of the June exam.

The text used is Deutsch Aktuell 2 (Seventh Edition), by Wolfgang Kraft, published by EMC/Paradigm. There is a corresponding workbook to the text. The video series Treffpunkt Berlin coordinates with each chapter of the text. Selections from the reader, UmbedingtLesen, published by Harcourt, Brace, Javanovich, are also used.

An in-depth study of children’s literature is part of the level 2 curriculum. The collected stories of the Brothers Grimm, and works by Heinrich Hoffman and Wilhelm Busch are examined in this unit.

Selections from a variety of sources which give information and insight to the culture and politics of Germany will be included throughout the year.

Supplemental instruction and materials may include:

The Hail Mary

Friedrich Schiller: Wilhelm Tell

Selections from Grimms’ Fairy Tales

Wilhelm Busch: Max und Moritz

Heinrich Hoffmann: The Struwwelpeter Stories

Students will be expected to memorize selected works, and write letters as well as paragraphs on various aspects of life.

Students must have a German-English dictionary for home assignments.

GRADING POLICY

  1. Tests based on text book work will be given each “F” day. A major project may be given in conjunction with a test or as an alternate assessment. These tests will count as 35% of the quarter grade.

2. Vocabulary quizzes (10 points each) based on groupings of 10-12 words each are given on
a daily basis. After eleven such quizzes, the lowest grade is dropped, and a grade
assigned (out of 100). This is averaged as a test grade.

3. Approximately 6-8 announced quizzes will be given each quarter. These will be
averaged together and count as 25% of the quarter grade.

4. Approximately 4 writing assignments will be given each quarter. These will be averaged
together and count as 15% of the quarter grade.

5. Homework is checked daily and a grade assigned at the end of each quarter. This will
count as 10% of the quarter grade.

6. Class participation, use of target language, cooperation, interest and industry are
will be assigned a grade and this will count as 15% of the quarter grade.(See rubric below)

  • All students are expected to check the “Blackboard” assignment page every day.

Daily assignments will be posted no later than 6:00 p.m. Assignments may also be

posted in the event of an unexpected school closing.

  • Office Hours: the best time to see me is before classes; I am usually available from 6:45 to 7:30 a.m. Because of the rotating schedule, students should see me to schedule an appointment during the day or after school
  • All make-up work should be done in the morning before 7:30, unless other

arrangements have been made with the teacher. Allow 5-8 minutes for “blue book”

vocabulary, 15 minutes for quizzes, and 45 minutes for tests.

  • Students who have not completed a homework assignment will not be allowed to

make up that assignment, since homework is checked at the beginning of each class. A
