Description:
The Early Intervention Practicum provides students with opportunities to learn and practice the various roles of the early interventionist in a variety of different settings and to demonstrate competence as a beginning early interventionist. Each student will work closely with an assigned university supervisor and a cooperating professional from their individual placement site. The Practicum Seminar allows students to share experiences and knowledge gained in placement sites; to seek support and ideas; and to maintain close contact with their university supervisor.
Course Requirements:
Attendance/Participation (7.5%):
· Includes your placement and seminar
· Active participation required
Vita (2.5%):
· Complete, organized, and appealing
· No spelling or grammatical errors
· Submitted electronically in accordance with the syllabus due date
Case Study Discussion (5%- written case study and facilitation, 5%- case study participation):
· Written case study prepared and presented thoroughly with group.
· Timely, meaningful, respectful discussion facilitation for the written case study.
· Meaningful, thoughtful, respectful participation in other groups’ case studies.
Competency Documentation (50%):
· Documentation for each is complete, thoughtful, and thorough (addresses each bullet)
· Total amount completed
· Documentation submitted electronically in accordance with syllabus due dates
Cooperating Professional’s Observations and Final Evaluation (15%**):
· Copy of agenda/lesson plan received before the observation (with enough time to be reviewed and approved by the cooperating professional prior to the observation)
· Scores/comments in each individual area
University Supervisor Observations (15%):
· Copy of agenda/lesson plan received before the observation (with prior review and approval of the cooperating professional)
· Scores/comments in each individual area
· Level of improvement in targeted areas
· Level of participation in post-conference
** If using your worksite without a cooperating professional, University Supervisor Observations will count as 30% of the total grade.
Grading:
Grades will be based on the total points achieved according to the following scale:
A+ = 99-100% B- = 81-83%
A = 94-98% C+ = 78-80%
A- = 91-93% C = 74-77%
B+ = 88-90% C- = 71-73%
B = 84-87%
Course Policies:
Academic Integrity
Students in this course will be expected to comply with the University of Pittsburgh's Policy on Academic Integrity. Any student suspected of violating this obligation for any reason during the semester will be required to participate in the procedural process, initiated at the instructor level, as outlined in the University Guidelines on Academic Integrity. This may include, but is not limited to, the confiscation of the examination of any individual suspected of violating University Policy. Furthermore, no student may bring any unauthorized materials to an examination, including dictionaries and programmable calculators.
Cell Phones
Students should not receive or make cell phone calls during class. Cell phones should be turned off or to silent mode to prevent disruption. Students are welcome to check messages or make calls during break time.
Disabilities
If you have a disability that requires special testing accommodations or other classroom modifications, you need to notify both the instructor and the Disability Resources and Services no later than the 2nd week of the term. Written Assignments
All students must submit written assignments on the dates required. All assignments must be word processed on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. Students are advised to make back-up copies of their assignments before sending them electronically to the instructor. Students are expected to submit written assignments that use appropriate grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Assignments with too many grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors will be turned back for correction and resubmission. A similar policy will be effective for assignments that do not follow the directions and formats required, including the use of People First Language.
