NURSING INSTRUCTOR

Full-time, non-tenure-track position

SALARY: The starting salary will be determined by placement on the BBCC salary index matrix (S.I.M.). The base salary shall be $43,343 with the opportunity of a higher placement on the matrix based on formal verification of relevant experience, credentials and/or degrees from accredited institutions. The contract is for 173 days as outlined in the Negotiated Agreement. This position is fully funded for three academic years.

SCHEDULE: The 173-day contract includes three weekly office hours and 22 weekly student contact hours. Although most of the lecture and campus lab instruction occurs between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., a portion of the clinical teaching may occur in early morning, late afternoon, or evening hours and/or off-campus locations.

THE POSITION:

Big Bend Community College is a small rural community college located in the sunny, central part of Washington State, and is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Big Bend Community College serves over 5,000 students annually, with an annualized FTE of approximately 2,100, in a 4,600-square-mile service district including 15 communities in Grant and Adams Counties and the Odessa School District in Lincoln County with on-site, online instruction, and interactive classrooms.

Our college seeks faculty who can emphasize the academic success of their students, and who love to teach. We particularly welcome those who will be active participants in our small but thriving college community.

The Nursing Program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing and the Washington State Nursing Quality Assurance Board. The program capitalizes on the use of modern technology, including utilization of high fidelity simulation. The program serves up to 24 students in each year of the two-year program and maintains a low student to faculty ratio.

DESCRIPTION:

This position is part of the instructional team for Big Bend’s “career ladder” healthcare program for those entering the nursing profession. This faculty member is responsible for teaching in a variety of healthcare areas and situations through lecture, lab and clinical instruction. The program’s “career ladder” includes three levels of certification; the beginning level is a one quarter Nursing Assistant “(NA) class; after four quarters of programmatic instruction, students are eligible for the Practical Nursing (PN) certificate; the career ladder culminates at the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:

·  Prepare and teach on-campus and off-campus lecture, lab and/or clinical instruction in nursing, especially in medical/surgical areas. Teaching assignments are determined by college needs and/or the individual’s background and experience and may include day, evening/night, online or occasional weekend classes.

·  Evaluate and develop or modify curriculum to reflect current standards of nursing practice.

·  Maintain or develop competence in current medical and educational technology.

·  Implement a current professional development plan.

·  Maintain current student files and monitor required materials.

·  Support students’ academic success by maintaining regular office hours, advising students and providing service to students with special needs.

·  Utilize effective computer skills including Internet, Word, PowerPoint, email and information technology resources.

·  Participate as an active member of working committees dealing with instruction, college-wide and department assessment, student matters and/or college related concerns.

·  Work effectively with colleagues and students of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and be a contributing member of the campus community.

·  Maintain positive and effective communications with the healthcare education team, students, faculty, administration and staff.

·  Foster a flexible, healthy learning environment with respect for student and staff diversity.

·  Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth and development.

·  Assume other duties as assigned by division chair or administrator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

At the time of application, all applicants must possess the following:

·  A Master’s degree in Nursing from a regionally accredited institution; however, candidates possessing a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and currently enrolled in a MSN program with completion expected by June 2016 will be considered.

·  A current unrestricted license as a registered nurse in Washington State or be able to attain prior to employment.

·  At least two years of recent, full-time equivalent experience as a registered nurse and evidence of current clinical skills in nursing, particularly in medical and surgical areas.

·  Strong computer skills especially in accessing and utilizing computerized resources.

·  Demonstrated ability to work well with students and colleagues.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

·  Teaching experience within the last three years in a community college or post-secondary setting.

·  Experience with implementation of strategies to improve student success and retention.

·  Experience with computer applications for instructional purposes; e.g. PowerPoint, Word, Internet, Outlook.

·  Experience in e-learning modes including online delivery and hybrid, and enhancing traditional classes with interactive multimedia presentations and Internet resources.

·  Use of innovative teaching methods such as coordinated studies or team teaching or using “active learning” based curriculum.

·  Experience with data driven assessment.

·  Demonstrated ability to get students excited about learning.

·  Bilingual (Spanish) fluency.

·  Demonstrated multicultural experience (fluency in other languages, work experience, or literary/cultural/travel experience) which add breadth and depth to teaching.
