08.45 – 09.15 / 2. TRAINING PLACEMENTS
By the end of this session you will:
  • Know your placements and rotation and how they relate to the curriculum
  • Know the roles and responsibilities that relate to the training programme
  • Be able to identify your Assigned Educational Supervisor, Clinical Supervisors and local staff
  • Know your own role and responsibilities in the programme

09.15 – 10.00 / 3. SUPERVISION AND TRAINING
By the end of this session you will:
  • Know the levels of supervision (observing, assisting, leading with assistance, and leading without assistance) and how they relate to patient safety, effective practice and professional conduct
  • Understand the arrangements for appraisal and assessment and the Learning Agreement in each placement
  • Be able to identify what must be trainee-led and what must be trainer-guided
  • Know how the multi-disciplinary team can help with training and assessment
  • Know where to go for help and support

10.00 – 10.45 / 4. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME
By the end of this session you will:
  • Have access to the Teaching Programme and Surgical Skills Programme
  • Know the mandatory activities: teaching sessions, meetings, assessments, courses, exams, research and quality improvement projects (e.g. audit)
  • Know the optional activities: trainees’ forum, study groups and peer review
  • Know your duties for on-call, rotas, out of hours working, handover and covering for others
  • Know how to maximise learning opportunities: operative exposure, ward rounds, clinics, reflective practice, use of simulation training and technology-enhanced learning

10.45 – 11.00 / Refreshments
11.00 – 11.45 / 5. INTERCOLLEGIATE SURGICAL CURRICULUM PROGRAMME (ISCP)
By the end of this session you will:
  • Know the aims, benefits and requirements of the ISCP
  • Be able to navigate the ISCP website including registration and enrolment.
  • Know how to upload portfolio evidence and conditions for probity and honesty in recording
  • Know how to sign the Learning Contract, ISCP Health and Probity statements
  • Be able to identify the syllabus topics and standards for your stage of training
  • Know the 3 stages of the Learning Agreement and how to set them up
  • Be able to differentiate between assessments for and of learning
  • Understand how achievement of your objectives will be determined
  • Know the appropriate use of WBAs and the process for engaging with qualified assessors
  • Know how you will be expected to demonstrate reflective practice

11.45 – 12.15 / ISCP Registration / Practice Session in breakout rooms
12.15 – 12.45 / 6. PREPARING FOR YOUR ARCP
By the end of this session you will:
  • Know the purpose of the ARCP
  • Know how the ARCP is conducted
  • Know the evidence required for the ARCP
  • Know the key dates and deadlines for the current year

12.45 – 13.30 / 7. DISCUSSION
