MADRICHIM PROGRAM 2012-13

WHAT IS IT?

“Madrich” or “Madricha” means “Leader/Guide” (masculine and feminine forms). Madrichim (plural form) support our ReligiousSchool by serving as teaching assistants in the classroom or working in other school capacities. Our Madrichim program offers 9th-12th grade teens the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, to increase self-confidence, express Jewish values, and learn practical teaching skills by assisting teachers in the classroom.

HOW WILL I KNOW WHAT TO DO?

The Madrichim program is not just a way to help our students; it is also an opportunity for high school teens to develop communication, organizationaland teaching skills. All madrichim are required to attend:

  • Orientation on Tuesday, August 28 from 7-8:30 pm
  • Madrichim professional development workshop on Sunday morning, November 4 (times TBA)
  • In-Service workshop on Sunday, January 27 from 2-4 pm

These workshops will provide important training on working in a classroom, teaching students, and even about interpersonal communication. This experience will look great on a resume or college application!

IS THIS A PAID POSITION?

YES! Madrichim who volunteeredat least one yearand received positive teacher recommendations, can begin getting paid beginning in 11th grade. Salary is $7/hr for having had one year’s experience and $8/hr for two years. Students serving as trained “shadows” for special needs students receive an extra $1 per hour. Madrichim can always choose to serve as volunteers and receive community service credit in lieu of payment.

WHAT IF I’M IN 9TH OR 10TH GRADE?

9th graders who are interested in volunteering are most welcome. 10th graders often choose to serve as a madrich/a in order to fulfill the Mitzvah Project requirement for Confirmation. Both grades can receive community service credit.
