· All classes have a limited enrollment and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Some instructors have a minimum enrollment requirement. If this minimum is not met the class will not be offered.

Monday - Guitar 1 with Steve Fox
Guitar 1, a beginning course in guitar performance will cover:1 tuning the instrument, 2 Naming the strings, guitar parts, and fingers for understanding traditional symbols used in songbooks and conventional publications. 3 An explanation of 5 major chord grips, one for each of the different strings of the guitar, allowing that there are 2 e strings. 4Use of a guitar pick and finger style [bare hand] approaches. 5 Rhythm and use of a metronome, the major scale and its fingerings. There will be no traditional musical notation covered in the first course, though it will be covered in subsequent classes. Students must bring their own guitar. **Minimum enrollment of 4 students.

Monday CHORUS with Mrs. Walsh
Calling all primary students, grades 1, 2 and 3, who love to sing! Students will learn about the important aspects of choral singing for young voices: proper breathing, vocal warm-up exercises, musical phrasing and good tone production.As the children learnthe songs, they will learn about basic music theory and solfege. The children will explore vocal literature written for young singers. During each 60 minute session the students will also play rhythmic accompaniments to the songs on the Orff instruments.
Mrs. Walsh has taught music (K-12)for many years. She has been a full time music teacher at River School for the past 20 years. Her educational background includes a BA in music from Smith College, a Master of Music degree from UMass and a certification in Levels I, II and III in Orff-Schulwerk. Mrs. Walsh has a California single subject credential in music, a California general subject credential and a community college credential. On the weekends she is music director at her church in Corralitos. Choral music has always been a very important part of her life.

Tuesday FUN WITH FOOD! with Laurie Fannin
Come play in the garden and learn about roots, shoots, leaves and more… This is your passport to culinary adventures ranging from North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, South America and even Antarctica! Participant requirements include an adventurous spirit, a willingness to try new foods and a fun-loving attitude to boot.
There will be a $45.00 additional materials fee, payable to the instructor. **minimum of 7, maximum of 15 students.

Tuesday Art For Fun with Terri Woodward
Come join us for a little exploration in art. This is the perfect opportunity to experiment with different projects and ideas just for fun. Get ready to roll up your sleeves for each project can be easily completed within the hour. We will be playing with various mediums to inspire and stretch the imagination. This is geared to our younger friends as we start off with a project of the day and then are encouraged to be more creative and adventurous within an open atmosphere. There will be a $45.00 additional materials fee, payable to the instructor. **Minimum of 10 students, maximum of 15 students.

Wednesday CHESS with Ted Yudacufski: Instructor Ted Yudacufski has been a National Tournament Director of the United States Chess Federation, directing hundreds of tournaments, including the U.S. Open, Paul Masson Chess Festivals, the Las Vegas National Open and more. His own daughter, Naomi, began chess at age 6 and won the U.S. Girls Junior Chess Championship when she was 12. Ted’s class will cover rules and principles of chess, strategies, tactics, and analysis of games of famous masters. Students will learn chess notation and pursue practical application.

Wednesday DRAMA CLUB with Gracie Poletti
In this fun and imaginative drama class, students will practice theater skills such as improvisation, scene and monologue work. We’ll play with the concepts of “Beginning, Middle and End,” the “5 W’s” of theater, creating an emotional life for a character, understanding stage direction and the physical elements of a stage, and critical analysis of a performance. Each 7 week session will include an exciting field trip to a local theater production with a backstage tour (this session we’ll see A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD at MPC; on a weekend, price of ticket NOT included in course fee) and have a discussion of that show during the following class. Gracie Poletti brings 22 years of experience as a professional actress, singer, stand-up comedienne, and acting coach to these classes in hopes of instilling a love of theater and acting in our children.

Wednesdays-Photography and Scrapbooking Class with Elizabeth Marsh
Students will:
-Learn basic photographing skills
-Experiment with still lifes, photos of nature, and people
-Do basic photo editing
-Learn to display their photos artistically
-Create a beautiful scrapbook as a remembrance
Presented by Fifth Grade Teacher Elizabeth Marsh, amateur photographer and experienced scrap booker
An additional materials fee of $45 made payable to the instructor will cover the scrapbook, enhancements, photo processing fees, and other supplies; students will need to bring a digital camera to all sessions.**Minimum 8 students, maximum 15.

Thursdays-Learn To Knit in Seven Weeks
Volunteer coordinator and knitting instructor Kathy Lang with other Carmel River School moms/knitters and local knitting guild members will give hands on instruction teaching your child the fine craft of knitting. Each child will receive a pair of knitting needles, enough yarn to complete 2 projects, and a "How To" book. By the end of the session, your child should be able to knit and purl and will have created at least one project, abook mark. If possible a second project, an afghan square, will be completedand stitched together with others to create a blanket for donation to Warm Up America. The needles, book and book mark will be theirs to keep for future knitting projects!

Thursday-Flight Club with Richard & Barbara Kreitman
In this class we will build and fly kites, paper airplanes, hot-air balloons, White Wings gliders, balsawood gliders and rubber-band propeller planes, rockets, and more. Students will get valuable experience working with their hands and their minds to design, build, and decorate real flying models out of wood, metal, paper, plastic, glue, and fabric. As we build we’ll also learn about the science of flight through experiments and media, but the focus will be on making things and going outside and flying them.**Minimum enrollment of 10 students.
