Books and Bagels--Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 10am
Our first book for 2015 is “Invention of Wings,” by Sue Monk Kidd, author of the bestseller “Secret Live of Bees.”
Set in early 19th-century Charleston, it is based on the true story of Sarah Grimke who, along with her sister Angelina, was one of the early pioneers in the abolition & women’s rights movements. At the age of 11 Sarah was given ownership of a ten-year-old slave girl named Handful. Going beyond the historical record, Kidd has produced a compelling story of two women linked by their courageous struggles against the constraints of slavery and bigotry.
Save the date: February 21, 2015 Join us for a lively discussion and a preview of the February selection, “The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Faces.”.
“Sock it to me” Sunday – January 25, 2015
As we bundle up to face the cold winter days, let’s remember those who do not have all the warm clothing they need. Last year Calvary members generously donated nearly 300 pairs of socks to help warm the “tootsies” of those in need. The Christmas sales are a great time to take advantage of the BOGO sales. Buy socks now for a gift and donate the free pairs in January. Men’s socks are in particularly high demand, but socks are needed for women and children as well.
FOOD FOR FAMILIES (Saturday, January 10 and Sunday, January 11)
On Saturday, January 10 and Sunday, January 11, we will be collecting donations to feed hungry people in our community. Your donation of $5.00 will go the Food Bank of Western New York to buy an entire bag of groceries for a local needy family. Following each service, members of the Outreach Committee will be stationed at both entrances to the reception room (just outside the church door) to accept contributions. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
WE WILL NO LONGER BE ACCEPTING DONATIONS OF FOOD ITEMS. WITH ITS MANY CONNECTIONS, THE FOOD BANK CAN TURN A $5.O0 DONATION INTO A LARGE AMOUNT OF FOOD FOR HUNGRY PEOPLE IN WNY.
REFUGEE CHRISTMAS GIFTS
Thanks to the generosity of our wonderful Calvary knitters (and others who donated items they bought), we were able to supply a Christmas gift of a hat, scarf and gloves to each of 52 single refugees through Journey’s End. These refugees came to the WNY area this past year by themselves and are facing their first winter here (most came from tropical countries, so the concept of winter is new to them). Now, at least, their heads, necks and hands will be toasty warm as they face the snow and cold. Thanks again for your talent and kindness.
