PRESS RELEASE

TONIC SOL-FA CHRISTMAS

Before classical orchestras, chamber quartets, jazz combos or rock ‘n roll bands, there was only one instrument: the human voice. Today, award-winning a cappella quartet Tonic Sol-fa determinedly takes this musical art form to a new plateau.

Whereas previous a cappella groups have followed the traditional “barbershop” formula, Tonic Sol-fa (pronounced “Tonic SOUL fa”) has built a legion of loyal fans with its pop arrangements, memorable performances and engaging stage presence.

Counting pop, rock, jazz, gospel, country and classical music among their influences, Tonic Sol-fa’s exceptional vocal ability have made them a favorite with critics and fans alike. The New York Times described their sound “a vocal kaleidoscope….” Audiences of all ages, meanwhile, revel in their live their upbeat music, soaring vocals and heart-felt lyrics. Their crowd-pleasing shows — which usually incorporate playful banter and impromptu performances — have endeared them to audiences across the Midwest.

Tonic Sol-fa Christmas, airing on public television stations nationwide beginning November 17, 2006 (check local listings), is a snapshot of their annual Holiday Tour concerts. Taped live at a sold-out Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis, Minn., this festive program highlights the group’s trademark humor and skilled musicianship as they perform a mix of traditional, secular and original holiday songs. Tonic Sol-fa transforms traditional carols like “Joy to the World,” “Adeste Fidelis,” “Silent Night,” “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and “Little Drummer Boy” with their strong vocals, lively arrangements and smooth harmonies. In addition, this spirited holiday special also features live performances of singles from Tonic Sol-fa’s first nationwide release, Boston to Beijing (2005), including their poignant original song, “Chances.”

The concert footage is intertwined with brief interviews with Tonic Sol-fa group members Mark McGowan, Greg Bannwarth, Shaun Johnson and Jared Dove. In their ten years together, Tonic Sol-fa has established itself not only as the most in-demand vocal group in the Midwest, but also as one of the most successful independent acts in America. In addition to substantial CD sales of its own independent releases (one million copies sold), the group has toured extensively, consistently selling out shows throughout the US and abroad.

Having been named one of the top five “must-see” groups in America by Campus Activities Today Magazine, Tonic Sol-fa has won numerous original song and album awards, and was nominated multiple times for the prestigious “Entertainer of the Year” award by the National Association of Campus Activities. The group has been heard on radio stations across the nation, including a performance on the 30th-anniversary show of NPR’s Prairie Home Companion. Tonic Sol-fa also appeared on national television during a Christmas day performance on NBC’s Today Show.
