Expectations for the School
The Military and GlobalLeadershipAcademy at Marie G. Davis will provide a rigorous core academic curriculum as well as relevant leadership and military history offerings in grades 6-12 with a focus upon the application of leadership theory and the student’s development of a global perspective. Academic experiences will be provided in a structured environment based on the principle that character education, leadership traits and international mindedness can be taught to promote student success. The magnet program will offer a unique, exciting and engaging opportunity for secondary school students to participate in a rigorous academic program preparing them for local and global citizenship, civic responsibilities and future leadership roles. JROTC and AP curriculum will be offered for high school students.
Expectations for the Teacher
Teachers will facilitate and differentiate instruction to address the learning styles of all students. Teachers will reinforce a school culture designed to value and honor all students, promote critical thinking and reasoning, inspire a love for learning and the application of knowledge. Teachers will ensure a high level of professionalism and technical expertise to effectively meet the needs of students and will participate in magnet theme-related professional development as appropriate. Teachers will be responsive to parent phone calls and emails, making return contact within 24 hours and initiating parental contact at any time when there is concern with a child’s performance or behavior.
Expectations for the Student/Family
MagnetAcademy students participating in the middle school program will focus primarily in the areas of academics, character development and leadership in order to prepare for leadership roles and rigorous coursework in the high school program. High school cadets will participate in the advanced JROTC program. At both levels, students will participate in drill and ceremonies, will learn and practice military courtesies, etiquette and protocol, and will perform community service projects. In addition to the core academic courses required of all high school students for graduation, students take specific elective courses related to the Academy designed to prepare for post-graduate civic and/or military leadership opportunities and to provide the foundation for continued formal higher education. The student should have the ability to think critically, be successful with academically rigorous courses and be willing to focus and fully apply his/her gifts and talents. The student should be committed to fulfilling the academic and extra-curricular expectations and requirements of the Academy program curriculum.
