Purpose of the New Role:
The role is required to provide the appropriate programme framework, governance and support to enable the IAT to achieve its ambitious research targets. The role holder will develop, manage and lead the programme of IAT activities and along with the directors, develop and implement the strategic plans for the Institute.The role holder will also be responsible for over-seeing the management of key IAT research and knowledge exchange projects and provide leadership and proactive management of a highly skilled team of business development and administrative staff.
Main Responsibilities / % time per yearTo work in partnership with the IAT Directors to develop the research and knowledge transfer strategy for the Institute for Aerospace Technology and coordinate cross-faculty strategic initiatives across the University. / 15%
To develop and implement operational, development, financial, communication and strategic plans. / 20%
To coordinate a programme of research and knowledge transfer projects, working closely with funding bodies, academic partners, industrial partners and internal multi-disciplinary research groups ensuring delivery against funding requirements. / 25%
Develop and implement appropriate IAT project and programme governance frameworks and methodologies. / 15%
In conjunction with IAT Directors, develop research proposals, financial frameworks and work programmes. / 10%
Lead and direct the IAT project and business support team to ensure efficient and quality delivery against the IAT operational plan and IAT project plans as required. / 10%
Manage project occupation of the ATC ensuring compliance with ‘research hotel’ model and effective utilisation of the space. / 5%
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Essential / DesirableQualifications/ Education / A good first degree, or equivalent plus relevant managerial experience. / PhD or equivalent in an associated field would be considered an advantage.
Skills/Training / Strong interpersonal skills.
Strong people management skills, including proven change management skills and the ability to motivate staff.
Proven advanced analytical and problem solving capability.
Operational planning, management and business process skills / Knowledge of the working processes and systems of the University of Nottingham
Experience of working in a research environment.
Recognised training in project management (e.g. PRINCE2).
Experience / Extensive management experience.
Breadth of vision to identify opportunities for strategic developments to bring about key research and ability to effect change.
Awareness and understanding of the activities, objectives and strategic direction of the aerospace sector and the University.
An understanding of the research lifecycle and experience of supporting impact and knowledge exchange.
Experience of developing solutions and contributing to strategic planning.
Experience in managing and controlling a substantial budget together with a clear understanding of financial management procedures and long-term business planning.
Experience of developing a significant team and successful track record in research project management.
Experience of influencing, negotiating and advising senior staff. / Widespread awareness and understanding of University strategy, activities and objectives.
Proven ability to work with senior staff, both within the Faculty and across the University.
Experience in change management and implementation of governance structures including project management.
Experience of developing strategic investment applications and securing appropriate funding to support business plans.
Experience of working in or with industry.

- Coordinate the delivery and quality assurance of research and knowledge exchange projects, working closely with industrial partners and multi-disciplinary research groups

Additional Information
The University of Nottingham set out a vision to consolidate its position as a leading institution for research into aerospace technologies and invest in infrastructure to further respond to grow its research portfolio in line with industrial demands.To allow for future growth and to address the most critical issues facing the aerospace sector, the University established the Institute for Aerospace Technology to provide a focus for our aerospace activities, to facilitate increased activity and deliver impact from our research by creating a streamlined pipeline from basic (TRL 1-3) to applied (TRL 4-6) research, the latter in close collaboration with our strategic partners.
This has resulted in an investment of £8.8million, including University investment of £3.1million in new equipment and infrastructure for basic research, and £5.7million in the establishment of the Aerospace Technology Centre, a dedicated research and knowledge transfer facility, part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, which supports Technology Readiness Levels 4-6.
The IAT project portfolio currently stands at £60m and the aim is to grow this to £100m by 2020.
The role holder will lead the core project team based at the Aerospace Technology Centre, Innovation Park.
