Introduction: Welcome to my Algebra 2 math class here at Perry High School. I am excited to have you in my class and excited to teach you algebra! On a personal note, I was born and raised in Arizona. I Graduated from Western New Mexico University and came back to AZ to teach! I played college softball and truly love sports. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Office Hours 7:00 am – 7:25 am by appointment. Any extra help or make up assignments will need to be completed during office hours or tutoring hours after school.

Tutoring: Tutoring will be available Monday- Thursday from 2:15 – 3:15. Each day different teachers will be housing tutoring. Until softball season begins (Q3), I will be available after school for tutoring.

Class Location: Perry High School, Room F102

Course Description: Includes the study of linear functions, quadratic functions, quadratic equations and complex numbers, polynomial functions, rational and radical equations, exponential and logarithmic functions, rational functions, sequences and series, trigonometry, data analysis, and statistics.

Textbook: Big Ideas Math Algebra 2: A Common Core Curriculum. The textbook is online based and as such, only students without internet access will receive a physical textbook. The majority of students will access their text online via a computer, tablet, or phone. Any student who wishes to have a physical textbook will have one checked out to them.

Bathroom: Each student will be given three bathroom passes at the beginning of the semester. These are the only passes they will be given all semester. Any passes not used by the end of the semester will be counted as extra credit, in the TEST category. The test category is worth the most; meaning keeping your bathroom passes could be very important!

Materials:

·  1 spiral notebook for notes

·  1 two pocket folder or 3 ring binder

·  1 packet of sticky page markers

·  Pencils

Ø  Note: This is all I allow in class

Ø  Any homework done in pen WILL lose points

Ø  Any test/quiz done in pen WILL be thrown away and retaken!

Ø  If you use a mechanical pencil; please have extra lead.

·  Graph paper

·  Graphing Calculator… MUST have!!

Graphing Calculator: Students are in charge of purchasing some type of graphing calculator. The suggested model is the TI-84 or TI-83. The purchase of this type of calculator is an investment. Both of these calculators are allowed on the SAT, ACT, and AP exams. In addition, this calculator will be used during many college math courses. The earlier the students purchase one of these calculators the sooner they will become comfortable with their usage.

Homework: The vast majority of homework assignments will be online. Students will be expected to complete the assignments listed. Students are responsible for the materials in the assigned portions of the textbook and worksheets. It is up to each student to work as many additional problems as he/she thinks necessary to master the assigned material. Daily homework points have a minimal effect on your grade; test scores have a big effect. The reason you do homework is to practice the skills needed to do well on tests. No matter how much, or how well I teach, if you don’t practice, you won’t learn the material.

Homework Grading Scale:

Score 100%-80% = 10 points

Score 79%-60% = 7.5 points

Score 59% or lower = 5 points

Quizzes: Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. Students who are current with homework assignments should be able to successfully complete the quiz in the time allowed.

Tests: Chapter tests will cover the most current chapter. If a student is to be absent on a test day, prior arrangements must be made with the teacher. In the event that you have to take a test at a later date than the rest of the class, you may be given an alternate form of the test.

Quiz/Test Corrections: I allow ONE test corrections per quarter (to earn up to a 70%); so choose wisely. There will be NO quiz corrections and absolutely NO quiz/test retakes.

Assigned Seats: You are to sit in your proper location according to the current seating chart. If you don’t, you will be marked absent. You may not change seats without permission.

Grading Policy: Your grade will be based on a “total points” scale. Semester grades are calculated on an 80/20 scale, meaning that grades do not reset each quarter. Grades are cumulative through the entire semester. The final exam is worth 20% your final grade. Tests and quizzes will make up approximately 80% of the overall point total, while homework and class participation will make up approximately 20% of the overall point total.

Late Work: I accept late work only until the current chapter is complete. Late homework will receive ½ credit… 50% is better than 0%. Once we have moved onto the next chapter I will no longer accept previous chapter’s homework.

Grading Scale: 100-90 A

89-80  B

79-70  C

69-60  D

59-0  F

Room Policies: Be Respectful of yourself, me, the campus, and your classmates. This is my number one rule. Be respectful! Second rule, no food, drinks, or gum allowed in class. Water Only!! Lastly, NO PHONES… I will take them!!

Classroom Dismissal: The bell does not release the students, the teacher does. As soon as the students are “seated and silent” they will be excused.

Discipline: I expect that every student will act in a responsible, mature, and respectful manner at all times. You are high school students, time to act the part. You have no right to interfere with my teaching or another student’s learning. Students who cannot, or will not act appropriately will be dismissed from class.

First Offense: Verbal Warning

Second Offense: Assignment to “Time Out.” (In class time out)

Third Offense: Removal from classroom and referral to administration.

Repeated problems: I will contact parents and involve the school administration.

Website/Infinite Campus: My website is the best place to know what is going on in class and to find absent work. I usually enter grades weekly to ensure grades are as up to date as possible. If something doesn’t look right in the grade book, please feel free to email me.

Questions: If you have any questions at any time during the year, please email me at

*This syllabus is subject to change at any time during the year as unforeseen issues arise or other human errors are encountered.

Go Pumas!
