Subject AccelerationANDWhole Grade Level Acceleration
Wording for subject acceleration and whole grade acceleration can be very similar. I did both a Subject Acceleration screening AND a Whole Grade Level Acceleration screening this spring. The process is basically the same, except subject acceleration used advanced subject testing and the whole grade acceleration took much more testing data and the Iowa Acceleration Scale.
Subject Acceleration
District Procedure
- Step One:
……… parent or guardian will be provided with a copy of the district guidelines. WHAT AND WHERE ARE THE DISTRICT GUIDELINES – we may need to ask Melanie Schumacher (previous K-8 Gifted Coordinator)
A MEETING SHOULD BE HELD WITH PARENTS – Parents should be informed at the beginning of the process and they should give input concerning out-of-school observations. This information is vital for assisting with the decision to move forward. So it should read…….Parent is invited to a meetingof the parent, with thebuildingGifted Education FacilitatorCoordinator, the child’s current teacher, and the principal or representative to discuss the benefits and appropriateness of proceeding. The child’s classroom performance will be noted at this time.
- Step Two:
REMAINS THE SAME
- Step Three: Review of Data
The building administration, along with….receiving teacher, and Gifted Education Coordinator, will review the data.
- Step Four: Placement and Notification
The data review decision will determine student placement; subject acceleration or grade level placement. Parents will be notified in person or in writing of the (omit word – team’s) decision.
Whole Grade Level Acceleration ----- YES. We still whole grade accelerate, as needed. (I just completed a case.)
