6th and 7th Grade Field Trip to Tall Ship Windy, Pinstripes Chicago, and Navy Pier

Wednesday, May 27th, 2015

Dear 6th and 7th Grade Parents,

Ahoy 6th and 7th graders and chaperones! We are in for an exciting educational adventure for our end-of-the-year field trip. We will board the bus at 7:45 a.m., and begin the morning at Navy Pier aboard the Tall Ship Windy. Great Lakes history and maritime tradition will come alive from the decks of this floating classroom. We will enjoy a unique, hands-on learning experience, with physics, ecology, history, and storytelling, while taking an active part in sailing the vessel. Students "muster" to participate in several learning stations, including:
·  Harnessing the Wind: The "physics" of how a sailing ship sails.
·  The Language and Life of a Sailor: Designed to teach the student nautical terms and names for the vessel parts, and provide hands-on exploration of the tools, trinkets, and nomenclature of a sailor from the 1880s to the present.
·  Real Pirates of the Inland Seas: The story of actual piracy on the Great Lakes. /
Students need to be AT SCHOOL by 7:30 a.m. Please drop off at the Annex door facing Parkside Circle (wooden ramp leading up to door). DRESS CODE and BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS are attached.

LUNCH and early afternoon fun! After our sailing adventure, we are going to walk three blocks north of Navy Pier to Pinstripes in Chicago. For a little over two hours, we will enjoy unlimited bowling and bocce ball, as well as pizza, drink, and dessert (lunch is included in field trip fee).

We will end the day walking back at Navy Pier for a late afternoon of exploring all of the fun shops, rides, restaurants, and attractions. Each student will be responsible for their own spending money and dinner expenses at Navy Pier. We will board the bus at 6:30 p.m., returning to the school at approximately 7:30-7:45 p.m. All parents should be in the school parking lot by 7:30 p.m. If we are unexpectedly delayed due to traffic, we will notify parents in route to SJE to spread the word.

The cost of this special, end-of-the-year field trip is $60.00 per student. This covers Tall Ship Windy, Pinstripes lunch and gaming (bowling and bacce), and the bus fees. All other spending money and dinner at Navy Pier is the responsibility of each student. The Food Court includes many reasonable fast food options, and there are several sit-down restaurants on the pier. All students will be assigned to a group with an adult chaperone, and must remain with their group at all times. REMINDER: NO CELL PHONES or other electronics are allowed on this field trip (cameras only).

The attached permission slip, behavior guidelines, and payment of $60.00 are due by Friday, May 22, 2015. Please make checks payable to St. John the Evangelist School. Thank you in advance for your support. NOTE: Since this is a long day, Mrs. Billmeyer is excusing 6th and 7th graders (who attend the field trip) from school on Thursday, May 28th; it will not be counted as an absence. If this is an inconvenience, please let us know. We can always use their help at school that day!! (Reminder: 7th Graders are expected to help serve the 8th grade dinner at The Seville beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening.) If you have any questions regarding this trip or can chaperone!, please contact either of us at or .
