Dear students,

Welcome to Italian 401. This course is designed for beginner to intermediate Italian language students. Throughout the course of the year, you will learn many aspects of the Italian language and culture, ranging from the basics of Italian grammar to the intricacies of the various regions of Italy. By the end of this course, you should be able to understand and use basic Italian, and have a better knowledge of Italian culture.

Important: Students who are currently enrolled in an extra-curricular Italian course (ie. PELO) should not be taking this course. The credits cannot be repeated.

Competencies: The following competencies will be evaluated in this course:

  1. Interacting in Italian
  2. Understanding various texts in Italian
  3. Producing various compositions in Italian

Description of tasks:

Throughout the course of the year, students will undertake several different learning activities to practice and improve their Italian skills.

  • Reading comprehension
  • Compositions
  • Oral presentations
  • Research projects
  • Etc.

Topics covered (subject to change):

  • Spelling and pronunciation
  • Italian grammar
  • Italian culture (artists, inventors, politicians, newsmakers, current events, etc.)
  • General Italian history

Material:

  • Your agenda
  • 1 copybook, 32 pages (for note-taking)
  • Loose leaf
  • One 2-inch binder
  • One pack of dividers
  • Pens, pencils, erasers, highlighters, white out
  • A box of tissues

In-class rules:

  • Arrive in class on time
  • Have all your materials for every class, unless otherwise specified. You will not be given permission to return to the lockers
  • No cell phones and no IPods allowed
  • Raise your hand to speak
  • Be respectful toward everyone, including the teacher and your classmates.
  • Watch your language: profanity and vulgarity will not be tolerated in any language.

General course rules:

  • Homework must always be completed. Failure to complete homework will result in a deduction of marks
  • Google Translate is not allowed
  • Late assignments will result in a deduction of 10% per late day with a maximum of 3 days.
  • All assignments must be stapled.
  • If for any reason you are absent, you have the responsibility to inquire about any missed work and assignments. You can email me or come see me in my classroom (3322.)
