Job Title / Senior Research Fellow
Job Purpose
To undertake research in appropriate subject areas and manage resources associated with research projects and the dissemination of outcomes. Manage research programmes, enterprise activity and teams in accordance with University strategy, policy and procedures and funder requirements.
Main activities and responsibilities
Student learning experience
  1. Contribute to learning and teaching programmes within and outside the University
  2. Supervise postgraduate research students.
Research, enterprise and scholarship
  1. Act as principal investigator or co-investigator on research projects.
  2. Contribute to the development of research strategies for the Faculty.
  3. Define research objectives and questions.
  4. Develop proposals for research projects which will make a significant impact by leading to an increase in knowledge and understanding and the discovery or development of new explanations, insights concepts or processes.
  5. Actively seek new research funding and secure it as is reasonably possible.
  6. Generate new research approaches and identify, adapt, develop and use research methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research.
  7. Review and synthesise the outcomes of research studies.
  8. Interpret findings obtained from research projects and develop new insights, expanding, refining and testing hypotheses and ideas.
  9. Contribute generally to the development of thought and leading edge practice in the field.
  10. Engage in enterprise activities with a wide range of partners within and outside the University including knowledge generation, knowledge exchange and knowledge transfer activities.
Managing people and resources
  1. Responsible for the delivery of own research programmes.
  2. Plan, co-ordinate and deliver research, consultancy or similar programmes ensuring resources are available and required income levels are achievedthrough:
  1. Managing the use of research resources and ensure that effective use is made of them.
  2. Managing research budgets
  3. Helping to plan and implement commercial and consultancy activities.
  4. Planning and managing own consultancy assignments.
  1. Be involved in Faculty level strategic planning and contribute to the University’s strategic planning process.
  2. Act as research team leader including:
  3. Provide academic leadership to those working within research areas, for example by co-ordinating the work of others to ensure that research projects are delivered effectively and to time, or organising the work of a team by agreeing objectives and work plans.
  4. Contribute to the development of teams and individuals through the individual performance review process and providing advice on personal development.
  5. Undertake line management responsibilities as required.
  6. Act as personal mentor to peers and colleagues.
Pastoral care
  1. Be responsible for dealing with referred issues for researchers within own project areas.
  2. Provide first line support for colleagues, referring them to sources of further help if required.
Liaison and networking
  1. Lead and develop internal networks for example by chairing and participating in institutional committees.
  2. Lead and develop external networks for example with other active researchers and leading thinkers in the field.
  3. Develop links with external contacts such as other educational and research bodies, employers, professional bodies and other providers of funding and research initiatives to foster collaboration, generate income and influence leading edge practice.
Academic administration
  1. Contribute to the management of quality, audit and other external assessments for example the Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Routinely communicate complex and conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge as well as to peers using high level skills and a range of media and to present the results of scientific research to sponsors and at conferences.
Teamwork
Ensure that teams within the Faculty work together and act to resolve conflicts within teams.
Initiative, problem solving and decision making
Resolve problems affecting the delivery of research projects within own area and in accordance with regulations.
Make decisions regarding the operational aspects of own research programme
Contribute to decisions which have an impact on other related programmes.
Provide advice on issues such as ensuring the adequate balance of research projects, appointment if researchers and other performance matters.
Identify opportunities for strategic development of new projects or appropriate areas of activity and contribute to the development of such ideas.
Work environment
Be aware of the risks in the workplace and the potential impact on their own work and that of others.
Depending on area of work (for example laboratories, workshops, studios) conduct risk assessments, take steps to reduce hazards and take responsibility for the health and safety of self and others.
Person Specification
  • PhD in relevant area of study
  • An established nationallyrecognised and emerging international reputationin the subject area.
  • Possess sufficient knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies.
  • Evidence of completed research which has been published with a strong publication record in high quality publications.
  • Experience of teaching at undergraduate level.
  • Experience of managing research projects and research teams.
  • Successful in obtaining grant funding.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to communicate complex and conceptual ideas t a range of groups,
  • Evidence of ability to collaborate actively within the University and externally to complete research projects and advance thinking.
  • Able to participate in and develop external networks.
  • Able to identify sources of funding, generate income, obtain consultancy projects or build relationships for future activities.
  • Able to balance the pressures of research, administrative demands and competing deadlines.

Special requirements
Able to undertake duties at different premises including any University campus as required.
Expected to work outside of normal office hours as required.
