Applications are invited for a Consultant post which will be based at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH), Golden Jubilee National Hospital (GJNH) and Gartnavel General Hospital (GGH). The successful candidate will join a team of 20 established respiratory consultants, two of whom specialise in pulmonary hypertension. The consultant will be responsible (with colleagues) for the care of both inpatients and outpatients with pulmonary hypertension including a right heart catheterisation list at GJNH. This consultant will also provide care for respiratory inpatients at QEUH (including on call duties) and respiratory outpatients at GGH, taking a share of a bronchoscopy list.

By joining the Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit (SPVU), the post offers the successful candidate the opportunity to develop a sub-speciality interest in pulmonary vascular medicine, joining a department with an active research programme looking at the basic science, imaging and clinical physiology aspects of this condition. The department has a strong academic background and close links with the University of Glasgow. The SPVU is supported by three clinical nurse specialists and three pulmonary vascular fellows.

Applicants must have MRCP, full GMC registration and a licence to practise. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of Interview. You should have extensive training in general respiratory medicine and an interest in pulmonary hypertension. Non UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

QueenElizabethUniversityHospital, NHS GGC

The QueenElizabethUniversityHospital is a new purpose built hospital that opened its doors in May 2015. The hospital has 1109 beds and provides medical care to a population of around 700,000 people in west and south Glasgow. The hospital provides the full range of medical and surgical services including many tertiary specialties such as neurology, ENT and renal medicine.

The respiratory department in the Queen Elizabeth currently includes 20 consultant respiratory physicians and a full range of allied health professionals. There is a 16 bedded acute respiratory receiving unit and an additional 112 respiratory inpatient beds. The hospital benefits from large intensive care and high dependency units and has facilities for extra-corporeal ventilatory support. In addition to pulmonary hypertension, the respiratory unit includes a full range of subspecialty services including lung cancer, cystic fibrosis, sleep medicine, home ventilation, interstitial lung disease, allergy, asthma, pleural disease, interventional bronchoscopy and advanced COPD.

We enjoy close links with Glasgow’s three universities and make a significant contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Research also has a high profile within the organisation. We provide excellent facilities for students and their tutors in the WolfsonMedicalSchool, based at GlasgowUniversity.

SCOTTISH PULMONARY VASCULARUNIT

Since 1998, the SPVU has been funded directly by the National Services Division of the Scottish Government. The role of the Unit is to provide care for patients with pulmonary hypertension from throughout Scotland. As such the Unitis the designated tertiary referral centre for those patients discovered to have severe pulmonary hypertension at other hospitals in Scotland. The Unit is situated in the Regional Heart and Lung Centre, Golden Jubilee National Hospital and at the QueenElizabethUniversityHospital, Glasgow. The Unit provides full investigative facilities for patients with pulmonary hypertension including cardiac catheterisation, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, echocardiography, CT scanning and cardiac MR.

The unit has a highly active research programme including collaborations with several universities including the University of Glasgowand a variety of Pharma companies. The unit is involved in preclinical basic science research and phase I, II and III clinical trials. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will develop a clinical / research theme to complement the current activity of the department.

The Golden Jubilee Hospital is a state of the art tertiary referral centre for cardiothoracic surgical and interventional cardiological services on the banks of the River Clyde in close proximity to GlasgowInternationalAirport and within 30 minutes of the centre of Glasgow by road and rail links. The hospital is managed by its own Special Health Board called The National Waiting Times Centre Board is part of NHS Scotland. Built recently in the 1990’s, it is a very modern hospital with 300 beds overall and all wards having single rooms with en-suite facilities. The estate is one of a high specification and has the unusual feature of a hotel and conference centre as an integral unit alongside the hospital. It has recently also opened The Beardmore Centre of Health Science, and recently established Scottish Innovation Centre, facilities which provide educational and research capabilities. Overall, the hospital is regarded by the staff as a very pleasing and attractive working environment and desirable patient experience.

The main clinical services provided are heart and lung, elective major orthopaedics, general surgery, plastic surgery and endoscopy services. The SPVU sits within the Regional and National Medicine Division alongside the National Advanced Heart Failure Service, the Scottish Adult Congenital Cardiac Service and the regional interventional cardiology service.

Trainees of all grades from FY1 to CMT 2 are attached to the unit. In addition 5 or 6 respiratory specialist registrars in training are attached to the unit and there are a number of clinical and research fellows.

Details of the Post

This is a new post and the successful candidate will be expected to provide a full range of consultant services as agreed with colleagues. The out of hours and weekend on call commitment will be within the acute respiratory receiving unit (ARU1) in theQueenElizabethUniversityHospital. The week day general respiratory commitment will be within the general respiratory wards.

It is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to pulmonary hypertension clinics, inpatient pulmonary hypertension care and a cardiac catheterisation list. In addition the successful candidate will contribute to general respiratory inpatient care, a general respiratory clinic, a bronchoscopy list and to lung cancer management at Gartnavel GeneralHospital in rotation with colleagues.

Some flexibility in timing of sessions, taking into account Bank Holidays, prospective cover in colleagues’ absence, and occurrence of receiving ward rounds, will be required.

Illustrative Job Plan:

This job plan is negotiable and will be agreed between the successful applicant and the Clinical Director. NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde initially allocates all full time consultants 10 PAs made up of 9 PAs in Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and one core Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) for CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning, internal routine communication and management meetings. The precise allocation of SPA time and associate objectives will be agreed with the successful applicant and will be reviewed at annual job planning.

The successful appointee will be able to play a full part in the teaching activities of the Respiratory department including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. There will be a commitment to ongoing clinical audit and opportunity for research.

The post holder will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients and in the running of the department.

f)Qualifications:

Essential: CCT in Respiratory and General Medicine

Desirable: Experience in Pulmonary Hypertension and Acute Medicine
