“Feed the Children of North Korea”

Dear Fellow Rotarians:

Behind the world media, the people of North Korea suffer from famine in silence.

food shortages approach 900,000 metric tons

millions suffer from starvationand chronic malnutrition

mortality of young children under 6 years of ageis 39% - unprecedented

anentire generationwill be lost unless immediate action is taken

In Yanji, China, near the border with North Korea, is the Yanbian University of Science and Technology (YUST). Since 2003, this Chinese university has been providing shelter and food to North Korean street kids in a home built by the university in North Korea. Not only are they given food to keep them alive, but many have recovered from near-death malnutrition to a normal status for development.

I am thrilled to report that Rotarians and non-Rotarians from Greater Edmonton contributed unconditionally $8,000 in 2005 and another $30,000 in 2006, making a direct impact on the lives of the most vulnerable and helpless children in that part of the world. I had the privilege to participate in theoperation of food procurement on the Chinaside of the border and food deliveries to the children’s home on theNorth Korea side of the border. This was important to make sure that the food funds reached the hungry children in North Korea. Indeed they did. I was even convinced that no overhead cost was charged.

All it takes is a mere 30 centsper child per day, yet YUST can only manage to accommodate 550 children, leaving 10,000 others to continue to suffer from famine in silence. We all love mankind. Giving is love in action.Let us have mercy on these children.
