I Speak English for my Mom

Stanek, M., & Friedman, J. (1989). I speak English for my mom. Niles, Ill: A. Whitman.

I Speak English for my Mom is a wonderful picture book for teaching students in grades 1-5 about English Language Learners. This would be a good book to use to teach students empathy for the people all around the country who have to depend on their children for almost every form of communication. It is not too wordy, but the vocabulary is substantial, so it holds the interest of most elementary school students.

Family Pictures

Garza, C. L., Rohmer, H., & Zubizarreta, R. (1990). Family pictures. San Francisco, Calif: Children's Book Press.

Family Pictures is a bilingual picture book about a Hispanic American family who document their culture filled lives with photographs. Students in grades 1-4 would enjoy this book. The little girl who narrates the story is easy to identify with. It would be a wonderful read aloud when teaching about Hispanic American culture.

Si Se Puede! = Yes We Can

Cohn, D., & Delgado, F. (2002). Sí, se puede! = Yes, we can!: Janitor strike in L.A. El Paso, Tex: Cinco Puntos Press.

Si Se Puede!=Yes We Can is a bilingual picture book about the historical L.A. janitor strike. It would be best to use with students in 4th -6th grades. The book would be great to use for an introductory lesson to paraphrasing for research as well.

No is No, Si is Yes

Galán, A. S., Chaskielberg, D., & Longo, A. (2005). No is no, si is yes. Buenos Aires: Kumquat.

No is No, Si is Yes is a bilingual picture book introducing some basic Spanish vocabulary. The book would be best to read aloud to a group of students from ages 4-7. The students enjoy the exposure to new Spanish vocabulary. The book also had lots of little jokes that make them laugh.

Say Hola to Spanish

Elya, S. M., & Lopez, L. (1996). Say hola to Spanish. New York: Lee & Low Books.

Say Hola to Spanish is another bilingual picture book written to introduce young students to basic Spanish vocabulary. PreK-2nd grade students enjoy listening to the book read aloud and always have many questions. The book includes a list of vocabulary words learned from the book on the last pages.

Diego

Winter, J., & Winter, J. (1991). Diego. New York: Knopf.

Diego is a bilingual picture book written for students in grades 3-6. The book tells the story of Diego Rivera and how he grew to be a famous Hispanic Muralist. The biography for young students is beautifully illustrated, which students this age really seem to enjoy.

Just Like Home

Miller, E. I., Reisberg, M., & Mlawer, T. (1999). Just like home. Morton Grove, Ill: Albert Whitman & Co.

Just Like Home or Come En Mi Tierra is a bilingual picture book written for students in grades k-3. The book tells the story of a young Mexican girl who has immigrated to the United States. This is a wonderful book to use when teaching about immigration. The students are able to identify with the young girl and how she must feel to be somewhere so different from her own country.

Cantemos Unidos

Cantemos unidos: United in song. (2004). Portland, OR: OCP Publications.

Cantemos Unidos is a Spanish language CD of 18 traditional Hispanic songs. The songs are sung slowly enough that students can sing along with them. Students enjoy trying to learn the songs and correct punctuation while listening and dancing along to the music.

Chato’s Kitchen

Soto, G. (2003). Chato's Kitchen: Book and Tape. Live Oak Media.

This book on tape version of Chato’s Kitchen would work nicely as a listening center for students ages 4-8. Chato the cat is very excited when a family of mice moves into the neighborhood. This book is full of Spanish vocabulary without being too challenging. If you enjoy this, you should also check out the Skippyjon Jones books.

Spanish: Parts 1 & 2, DVD

Román-Mendoza, E., Gómez-Moran, D., Cerebellum Corporation., & Standard Deviants (Performing group). (2000). Spanish: Parts 1 & 2. Falls Church, VA: Cerebellum Corp.

The Spanish: Parts 1&2 DVD is full of wonderful Spanish lessons for students in grades k-2. There are songs, short videos, and even some interactive games. This DVD would be good for introducing young students to the Spanish language.

The American Council of Teaching Foreign Languages or ACTFL is an organization dedicated to providing resources to teachers who teach foreign language to students in grades k-12. This mission began in 2005 and the ACTFL continues to assist teachers and English Language Learners throughout the country. Some of the links on the resources page include information for parents and classroom resources.

Teacher Discovery is mainly a school supply and teaching materials vendor. They are one of the only catalog companies in the country that sell Spanish language teaching materials specifically for elementary Spanish teachers. Their website also contains a resources page that has links to some helpful lesson plans and videos (most of which include their products).

This website contains many wonderfully helpful links with foreign language lesson plans and resources. This site was created by a foreign language teacher, so the links provided are very helpful. Some of the links are outdated, so the user might want to check the links. This is a great website for elementary Spanish teachers.

Scholastic provides many resources for foreign language teachers of students in grades k-12. The focus of this website is Hispanic culture. The site includes a special section on Famous Hispanic Americans and some links to pre-created webquests. This site is very helpful for the elementary Spanish teacher as well as the regular classroom teacher.

Learnalanguage.org is a helpful website that contains many links to elementary Spanish resources. Some of the resources included on the site are worksheets, lesson plans, and games. This site seems like it would be helpful for a teacher to use while reinforcing lessons.

The Spanish resources page of lingolex.com is a wonderful site for elementary

Spanish teachers. One of the links provided on the page is a Spanish word of the month. The list is quite long and gives a definition for the word while giving its Spanish and English meanings. The site contains many other helpful resources for the foreign language teacher.
