Soccer Draft Rules

Draft Rules:

DRAFTING ORDER

A.For 12U teams and UP will draft players in the reverse order they finished the previous season. The last place team will draft first through the first place team, who will draft last ending the first round. The second round will start with the first place team drafting through to the last place team. This serpentine style draft will continue until all players are selected.

B. For 10U teams and belowThe number of returning players to each team will determine draft position. The team with the fewest returning players will draft first, and so on. If there is a tie, it will be decided by a flip of a coin.

1.All Soccer leagues in the Vinton Booster Club will follow these rules if they have two (2) or more teams.

2.Draft Eligibility - All boys/girls living within the boundaries drawn by the sanctioning body and/or Roanoke County for Vinton leagues are eligible for the draft if they have registered and paid for league play with the Vinton Booster Club prior to the the draft and are not assigned to a team from the previous season.

3.Coordinators may set a cut off time no more than three (3) hours before the draft. Any player to sign up and/or pay after that cut off time will be placed with late sign ups and follow the procedure of late sign up placements.

4.A player’s fee must be paid or specific arrangements made with the Treasurer before the date of the draft/team assignments. Otherwise, a player may be prevented from assignment to a team at the discretion of the Coordinator/Commissioner and the Board of Directors.

5.A complete re-draft of a given league can be ordered with the approval of the league Coordinator, Athletic Director and the Board of Directors.

6.Each team will have a selection in the first round of the draft. Each team will draft in subsequent rounds, provided they have not reached 7 players on their roster. Once all teams have reached 7 players, rounds will continue in the same order as the first round, until all players have been drafted.

7.Expansion teams will select first, and will receive a bonus pick at the end of the first, second, and fourth rounds.

8.Rosters should have as close as possible equaled number of older and younger players, per age bracket.

9.A player on last year's team will remain on that team for the coming season unless released by the coordinator. Released players will be made available to the draft pool. .. such request is received from the parent in writing stating justification prior to the draft. Said request must be approved or disapproved by the coordinator prior to the draft.

10.A list of all eligible participants names is to be complied by the coordinator and given to the coaches prior to the draft date set. No names are held back. The only participants eligible are "paid players" whose names appear on the coordinators list..

11.If there are enough eligible players signed up to have more than one (1) team in an age group. A draft will be held to field those teams.

12.Late sign up and unpaid players will not be drafted and will be placed on a waiting list. When these players become eligible they will be placed on teams in the draft order of that season.

13.No requests for placement on any team at any age group for any reason will be taken. A request may be made before the draft directly to a coach, but if that coach chooses not to honor the request, then that decision is final. Please Note that; Requests for 8U Coed soccer will be considered for 1st year players.

14.CHILDREN OF COACHES AND SIBLINGS

All eligible players must be drafted, including children of coaches and siblings of current

players.

15.Unless already assigned to a team, coaches’ children should be drafted in the first 3 rounds.

Each coach shall, prior to the start of the draft, announce his or her preference for an assistant coach. If not already assigned to that team, the assistant coaches’ child shall be drafted in the 2nd round.

16.For the purposes of the draft, each team shall have only one assistant coach. Teams with more than one intended assistant will need to draft those players.

17.Siblings of existing players should be drafted with in the first 3rd rounds, unless they have already been selected as coaches’ child.

18.Each team will drop out of the draft when they have one remaining pick. The pick will be made when the draft pool reaches the point where each team will be making a pick that will even out the teams, even if there are other players remaining in the draft. (each team MUST have a “last round” pick). Teams will come back into the draft to pick in the “last round” based on the order they dropped out of the draft (secondary draft order). In example below, the secondary draft order will be Coach C, Coach A, Coach D, Coach B:

19.Uneven Number of Players - If there are an uneven number of players in the draft, the teams with the most returning players will carry the extra players. These players will be distributed after each team has made their official “final round” pick.

Coaches may agree on a random draw to determine who will get to carry the higher number of players.

20.Any player, except a returning player to a team, whom has not paid by the draft date, shall not be allowed in the players draft pool. After the original draft date has passed, and once a player has signed up online at and paid, they will ultimately be assigned to a team in due time. The order of which teams will take on assigned players will be determined based on which team would have received the next pick in the draft based on the secondary draft order (order in which teams dropped out previous to the “final round”).

21.Expansion Teams - Expansion teams will select first, and will receive a bonus pick at the end of the first, second, and fourth rounds.

until the expansion team has the same number of players as the team with the lowest number of returning players. At this point, the expansion team will draft in its regular order to completion of the draft.

22.ONE (1) Dissolved Team - When a team must be dropped from the league because of a lack of players, the dissolved team will be the team (without a returning head coach) with the least amount of returning players. The players on the roster of the dissolved team will go back into the draft.

23.TWO (2) Dissolved Teams - When 2 or more teams are dropped because of a lack of enough players, a complete redraft of all signed up players will occur.

24. Trades - Only if all coaches in a league agree prior to the draft, coaches may trade players within five (5) minutes after the draft is complete and before any coach leaves the draft room.

TEAMS

A team is considered intact if there are at least two returning players. Any team with only one returning player will be classified as an expansion team, with the sole returning player being placed in the draft pool. If an expansion team is needed, it will draft according to the order described above.
