PLAYFUL PIG-INSPIRED DESIGN AND MOUTH-BLOWN SNAKE DECANTERS
JOIN RIEDEL’S GLASSWARE MENAGERIE
(July 2013) – The 300 year-old global leader in varietal-specific glassware, Riedel debuts two new decanters designed by the wine glass family. A new addition to its selection of mouth-blown lead decanters, the Curly will be offered in two versions of clear glass and a hint of pink. A clear, curved decanter, playfully evoking a pig’s tail, is available at Town House now and retails at HK$1990. The second new decanter to be added to the Riedel collection is the BOA HK$4,720 which is inspired by the powerful boa constrictor snake, and is also available at Town House.
As with all of Riedel’s decanters, the Curly and the BOA’s curvature serves as a powerful wine tool for the enjoyment of wine. With the Curly, when the wine flows through the swirl of the tail, it is double-decanted, speedily opening up the wine, achieving what would take hours of decanting in a typical bowl-shaped carafe.
The BOA decanter advances double-decanting technology even further. Riedel has developed this decanter to accelerate the aeration of wine by the creation of a vacuum within the vessel. The BOA features a more tightly-coiled body, which brings wines to full flavour profile potential.
Explaining the design of the new Curly decanter, Georg Riedel said: “The curl of a pig’s tail has always intrigued me, I have long wondered what the function of the pig’s coiled tail is, and sought to provide an answer by interpreting the shape into an elegant, functional design.” The resulting form creates a series of air pockets which charge the wine as it moves towards the elegant opening upon pouring.
The BOA joins the Eve (2009), Mamba (2011) and Cobra Verde (2012) in Riedel’s arsenal of serpentine decanters, each designed by Maximilian Riedel.
“I have long been fascinated by organic shapes and the flow of glass, and enjoy the creative and technical challenge of incorporating snakes into my designs,” comments Maximilian Riedel. “Of course, it does help that serpentine shapes facilitate double-decanting, the science I’ve been proud to develop for Riedel decanters.”
