Animal Farm Photographic Essay
Background: We have been examining the use of propaganda, or using language and
manipulation in order to get your way, in the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell. Napoleon and his speech writer Squealer craftily use propaganda to confuse, influence, and keep the other animals on the farm under control, as well as to make outsiders think that Animal Farm was successful.
There are many types of propaganda that are commonly recognized including:
1) name calling, 2) glittering generalities, 3) euphemisms, 4) transfer, 5) testimonial, 6) plain folks, 7) bandwagon, and 8) fear.
Prompt:
Which three types of propaganda did the pigs use to their advantage most effectively and why do you think that type of propaganda worked so well on these animals?
Instructions:
Decide on three specific examples in response to the prompt. It is imperative that each of the examples you use include a direct quote from the novel. Make sure that the quote flows in the explanation and is not simply dropped in the middle of a paragraph. Be sure to analyze the situation from Animal Farm where the type of propaganda is used. Remember to stay in literary present and cite quotes in proper MLA style. Think quote sandwich!
Next, use original photography to symbolize the types of propaganda you’ve selected. In your explanation, explain how your photographic image is symbolic of this type of propaganda in the human world.
Display your photography in a gallery-like way on a poster, and make a placard under each photo for your explanation. There should be a label identifying each example type of propaganda. Be sure to give your photographic essay a creative title. Keep your poster clean and neat, and be sure your name is on the front.

walk.
