106 REARING CALVES

Another excellent entry of good quality calves generally, but more medium quality types when comparing to last week.
Dairy Breeds (41): Still well sold for all on offer, strongest calves to £148 for E R Robinson, £138 for R A Pullin. Best £90+, medium rearing bulls £40-£60, 3rd quality rearers £250-££0. A few very small calves £50-£10. Dairy Shorthorns to £108 for A Webb & Son. Brown Swiss to £98. Swedish Red £48.
Native Breeds (38): Lots of Angus on offer today mainly of very good quality, Hereford bulls sold to £262 and £258 for Alfie Jones, all £235+. Hereford heifers to £152 for A W Jones. Angus bulls to £278 for L Lewis and R J Handley & Son. A run of Angus bulls off suckler cows old at £240-£260 for C D Hill Partnership. Their heifers top at £235 and 192 for A Webb & Son. Smaller Angus heifers £70-£90. Weaned Angus bulls from W Knights sold to an excellent £365.
Simmental (4): A super bull from M A Maslin & Son at £348, £288 for A & M E Hass. Heifers to £215 for Lodge Farm Ltd.
Charolais (2): A good heifer from W Knight made £225. A weaned bull calf from the same home made £365.
Limousin (7): Best bulls to £275 for Tim Rawlings, £248 for R C Ponting. Heifers £222 from P C & R Jenner.
British Blue (14): Good entry topping at £330 for E J Webb & Son. Other bulls of quality £280, smaller bulls £200-£240.
The heifers reached a top of £272 and £250 for L Lewis. The medium types well sold at £130-£170.

Incalf Friesian heifers sold to £1000 & £900 from Mr S Hawkins, Moreton Valance. Aberdeen Angus cow (05) & her Aberdeen Angus bull calf sold to £740 from Miss J Curwen, Minchinhampton. Empty Simmental cows sold to £735 from M/s Ridout Farms, Seagry.
Pedigree Aberdeen Angus bulls (17mnths) sold to £880 & £785 from Mr R Breakspear, Stanford Dingley with Blonde bulls (16mnths) to £940 from Mr M Wheeler, King Stanley.
229 STORE CATTLE

Averages: Steers £595, Heifers £489
A very pleasing entry for the time of year with double the number forward on this sale last year. The stronger, better shaped cattle were in short supply but a good trade on all forward.
The stronger cattle (Over 24 months) saw a handful forward with overage Simmental steers to £832 (132p/kg) from Mr S Hawkins, Moreton Valance. Limousin steers (27mnths) sold to £800 (143p/kg) from Mr H J Caswell, Wanborough. The heifers saw British Blue’s to £780 (153p/kg) & Simmental’s to £700 (141p/kg) from the same home. Overage British Blue heifers sold to £660 (116p/kg) again from Mr S Hawkins.
The farming cattle (18 – 24mnths) saw some grand runs of native breed cattle with Hereford steers to £830 (150p/kg) from Mr K Silverthorne, Berkeley. Aberdeen Angus steers sold to £790 (146p/kg) & £740 (145p/kg) from Mr T Harding, Kington & £755 (151p/kg) & £705 (150p/kg) from Mr J Neather, Whittington.
The heifers saw Simmental’s to £690 (147p/kg) from Mr K Silverthorne, Berkeley & £645 (137p/kg) for Limousin’s from Mr H J Caswell, Wanborough.
The younger stores (14 – 18mnths) sold to a good trade with a grand run of Aberdeen Angus steers from M/s Marsden Farms, Rendcomb selling to £730 (154p/kg) & £692 (153p/kg). The heifers sold to £485 (124p/kg) & £472 (135p/kg). Simmental steers sold to £622 (132p/kg) from Mr R Breakspear, Stanford Dingley.
The weaned calves saw Charolais steers to £378 (229p/kg) from Mr W Knight, Beenham with Aberdeen Angus steers to £378 (154p/kg) from Mr R Potter, Grittleton.

Overall Average –158p/kg
A reasonable entry sold to a very good trade with the best handyweight lambs trading to a premium between 165 – 170p/kg topping at 176p/kg £72 for 41kg from Mr S Powell. The general run of lambs sold well trading between 155 – 160p/kg. The heavier lambs traded around £75 topping at £83.50 for 52kg from Mr J Cook.

Another pleasing entry sold to a strong trade throughout with the best Suffolk & Continental ewes traded between £75 - £88 topping at £95 with the best Mules £55 - £65 topping at £74. The half meated ewes still met a good trade selling generally between £55 - £65 with the plainer & smaller sorts £45 - £55 generally. Slaughter rams sold to £109

A few more coming forward and were rewarded with a good trade on all forward. The better shaped sorts saw Continental steers to 148p/kg for a 725kg British Blue from M/s B J Ford & Sons with their heifers to 153p/kg for a 510kg Limousin. The native breeds saw 2 cracking Longhorn steers from M/s Harrow Farms to 151p/kg & 150p/kg.
The medium cattle sold extremely well trading between 138 – 145p/kg. A few lesser shaped sorts traded between 126 – 135p/kg.

A short entry that met a strong trade compared to other centres and a top price of £840 for H J Noad, Oldbury. The plainer Friesians a touch harder to place in the 40-45p bracket, the better cows still 90p+, the best Continental cows trading 105-110p generally. Overage steers and heifers a flying trade top money for Hugo Hull’s British Blues at £988, John Fords Limousin top price at 166p. The 5 steers forward averaged 137p. Heifers as well sold for type 120p, average top 142p again for H J Noads Continental heifers reaching £828.
