Lunchtime Supervisor Job Description

Job specification according to any LEA or Government orders applicable.

The post holder is required to be aware of the aims and philosophy of this school which is rooted in recognising achievement, understanding individual potential and raising standards for those who learn and work in the school. This will also include the professional attitude to and support for staff, governors, visitors and members of the community. The post holder is expected to treat all information relating to children and adults within the school as completely confidential. Lunchtime Supervisorswork under the direction of the School Business Manager and are a valuable member of our school team.

A Lunchtime Supervisor performs an important role in the management of the school and takes initial responsibility for:

  • The conduct of pupils during the lunch break
  • Continuance of the high level of positive behaviour achieved whilst the children during the lunch break, inside and outside the school buildings.
  • The Lunchtime Supervisor should make sure that all children in their care are aware of these expectations and seek their co-operation in achieving them.

A Lunchtime Supervisor must

  • Be continually vigilant and pro-active
  • Keep control using positive behaviour strategies
  • Avoid adopting a passive or confrontational role
  • Assess the seriousness of particular situations and consider the possible options for action and likely ramifications of those actions and then, and only then, act.
  • At all times be aware of the dangers of “victimisation” (ie assuming that particular individuals are in the wrong, based on previous instances)
  • Remember that positive behaviour should be openly praised and negative behaviour quietly dealt with.
  • Follow the school’s agreed policy and procedures for behaviour.
  • Know and follow the school’s health and safety regulations.
  • Help the children keep safe and happy within their environment.

A Lunchtime Supervisor will

  • Assist in the cleaning of dining hall furniture and the surrounding area.
  • Monitor the health of children, applying basic first aid if appropriate. The Governing Body encourage Lunchtime Supervisors to avail themselves of the first aid training offered to them.
  • Inform the class teacher or Headteacher of all concerns related to children's health and behaviour.

Within the framework of their responsibilities Lunchtime Supervisors will

  • Deploy themselves so that a high level of supervision can be maintained in the school and grounds throughout the lunch period.
  • Exercise sanctions upon children if, in their view, a particular child is behaving in an unsociable or dangerous way. These sanctions may include exclusion from specific areas of the school or grounds or sending a child to wait in a central place until the matter can be drawn to the class teacher's attention. A record of such action must be made in the log books issued to all Lunchtime Supervisors.

In the conduct of all their duties, the Lunchtime Supervisor must

  • Remember not to exceed their role or responsibilities.
  • Must defer any matter that they regard as serious in the first instance to the Senior Lunchtime Supervisor, who in turn reports to the School Business Manager.
  • Have regard for the need for confidentiality
  • Be prepared to train in basic first aid if required
  • Be prepared to attend training courses
  • Encourage children to play games.
  • Attend occasional staff training sessions and progress meetings out of work hours.
