TERI University Conducts Workshop on PhD Research
in Architectureand Built Environment

Programme aimed to strengthen advanced research in participating institutions

New Delhi, 16May 2016: TERI University, the leading institution dedicated to education for sustainable development,conducted a first-of-its-kind workshop on ‘Doctoral Research in Architecture and Wider Built Environment Discipline’ at its campus in New Delhi. The interactive workshop saw participation of over 40 professors and scholars from institutions in Delhi and surrounding regions offering graduate programmes in architecture, urbanplanning and other built environment related disciplines, and discussed topics related to architecture, planning, landscape, culture and heritage, real estate, sustainable and inclusive cities etc.

TERI University’s workshop focused on the significance and approach for undertaking doctoral research in the vital domain of urban built environment and aimed to help various higher education institutions in initiating and strengthening their PhD programme, in view of the importance that such colleges are attaching to the discipline and growing academic and research community.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Dr. Rajiv Seth, Pro-Vice Chancellor of TERI University said, “We find a gap and need for advance researchin domain ofarchitecture and built environment that will be vital for shapingIndian cities as we continue to grapple with issues of sustainability. This is being recognised by other institutions and they are building up their architecture related PhD programmes.” Dr. Shaleen Singhal, Head of the Department of Policy Studies at TERI University who was also the Director of this workshop said, “We structured the Workshop with the aim of orientingscholarstoundertakehighqualitydoctoralresearchindomainofarchitectureandbuiltenvironment. We focusedonorientation,analyticalapproaches,techniquesandmethodsforPhDresearch,including topicsrelatedtoarchitecture,planning, landscape, cultureandheritageandrealestate.”

The Workshop had faculty members and research scholars from School of Planning and Architecture New Delhi, Ansal University, IIT Roorkee, DCRUST Murthal, Jamia Millia Islamia University, GRSP Punjab, Amity School of Architecture & Planning Noida, Lingaya University, Manipal University Jaipur, Apeejay School of Architecture and Planning, Lovely Professional University, JMS School of Architecture, MIT Mundka, Sunderdeep College of Architecture, Manav Rachna International University and TERI University, among others, in attendance.

Fromlaunchingthefirstdoctoralprogrammein2001with13studentsandmaster'sprogrammesin2003with19students,to173doctoralstudentsand573master'sstudentsontherollsinthe2015academicyear,theUniversityhascometostandforexcellenceandqualitywithinaremarkablyshortspanoftime.Overthisperiodoftime,theUniversityhasgrowntoofferawiderangeofacademicprogrammesrelatedtosustainabledevelopment. TheUniversityisacentreforhigherlearningandoffersonlypost-graduateanddoctoralprogrammes,inareasrelatedtoPublicPolicySustainableDevelopment,EnvironmentalStudies,NaturalResourcesManagement,EnvironmentalandResourceEconomics,ClimateScienceandPolicy,RenewableEnergyEngineeringandManagement,WaterResourcesManagement,Geoinformatics,PlantBiotechnology,BusinessSustainabilityandinInfrastructureManagement.TheUniversitytranscendstraditionalteachinganditscoursesattractstudentsfromvariousfieldslikeeconomics,geography,engineering,socialsciences,physicalsciencesandlifesciences.Thisallowsanintegrationofvariousperspectivesintothecurriculum,whichprovidesaholisticapproachtotheirstudy.TheUniversity'sacademicprogrammesareknownforanemphasisoncriticalthinkingandbroadinterdisciplinaryexposuretotherangeofareasrelevanttothestudyofsustainabledevelopment.

Givinganimportancetointernationalperspectivesinitsprogrammes,TERIUniversityhasenteredintomemorandumsofunderstandingwithseveralinternationaluniversitiesaimedatfacilitatingmutuallybeneficialexchangeofstudents,faculty,knowledge,resourcesandideas.

In2007,theUniversitylaunchedanacademicexchangeprogrammewithYaleUniversity(SchoolofForestryandEnvironmentalStudies)withsupportfromtheVKRasmussenFoundation.Subsequently,in2008,theUniversitylaunchedanotheracademicexchangeprogrammewithFreieUniversityofBerlin,Germany,withsupportfromDAAD(theGermanAcademicExchangeService).

In2009,fourscholarshipprogrammesweresetupforstudentsinvariousprogrammesattheTERIUniversity,fundedbySindicatumClimateChangeFoundation,HSBC,DeutscheBankandIndianOilCorporationLtd.
