Come on out to WFN Youth Center to meet new friends and participate in a ton of fun activities and programming such as the following Fall/Winter planned programs;

Youth Drop In

Monday to Friday

4:00 to 9:00pm

Youth aged 12-18yrs are invited to the youth center to socialize and engage in a variety of activities. We have different resources available such as a small computer lab, video gaming systems and a pool table. Every evening youth have the opportunity to take part in drop-in sports in the gym including dodgeball , basketball, and open gym time. The youth also go on weekly out trips to places like H2O, movie nights, Scandia, lazertag, bowling. Youth from the community are all invited, whether they are WFN members, aboriginal on reserve, or youth who live on WFN lands.

WFN Youth Leadership Council

2nd Monday per month-Currently Full

The mission of the WFN Youth Leadership Council is to guide youth, aged 15 to 24, in taking a positive, more prominent role in the community, by promoting unity, leadership skills, and independence. The goal is to empower youth, give them a voice in the community, build confidence and promote the development of future leaders. All seats are currently filled with 2 alternate positions.

Driver’s Training

Monday to Friday

The Drivers Training Program is a partnership between Westbank First Nation and the Westside Driving School. This program is designed to help new drivers gain the confidence and skill that they need in order to become a properly licensed driver under the graduated licensing program. This program is open to WFN youth who hold a valid Learner’s license and who can contribute a portion of the fee. Please contact Nicole to register and find out more details.

2BBoys

Wednesdays- 8 week program Feb 2017

2:45 to 4:00pm

2BBoys program is designed to assist boys 11/12 to connect to their true selves in an empowering, respectful, healthy and dynamic way. The program focus is on building skills to help boys excel socially and emotionally. This is open to WFN member, aboriginal or community members living on reserve.

Cooking Sessions

Thursdays (Sept-June)

6:00-7:30pm

A fun session to learn basic cooking techniques and all sorts of healthy recipes from moose stew & bannock to spaghetti & Caesar salad.

Girl Power

Mondays (Spring 2017) TBD

4 to 5:30pm

Girl Power, a program for girls aged 11/12, is geared towards encouraging the development of strength, courage, confidence, honesty and communication skills for girls. The goal is to enhance girls’ abilities so that they are able to take full advantage of their talents, academic interest, career pursuits, and potential for healthy relationships. The topics covered include self-esteem, body image, practical skills, boundaries, friendship, anger and physical fitness. This program is open to WFN members, aboriginal or community member residing on reserve.

Youth Homework/Tutoring Programs

Mondays and Thursdays (or any day needed)

4:00-6:00pm

If you require any homework or tutoring support just ask, the youth leaders are here to help, we have homework supplies from pencils to art supplies if needed. You are rewarded with individual pizza after homework is completed! J

One must attend Youth Fitness to qualify to come to the movies.

Youth learn basis fitness skills & finish with a fun game of dodgeball or handball.

Community members have access to the facility for basketball related activities such as practicing technique, playing a game or simply shooting some hoops.

Snow Shoeing

With snow permitted, dress for a great workout, fun for all ages, come out and get active with family and friends! Youth/Rec has 9 snowshoes that can be used on a first come first served basis, protein bars and water will be provided, we will hike around our community or go up to Telemark. Please contact any Youth/Rec leader for more information.

WFN Snowboard Team

Saturdays & weekly Dryland session– Dec-April

8:15am to 4:00pm

The snowboard team is open to WFN members and is geared towards developing skills in snowboarding which will lead to competitions. The team has the opportunity to work with an instructor to hone their skills which will lead to more advanced training and to higher level competitions. To ensure our athletes reach their full potential, %90 attendance is mandatory. A $200 deposit is required at the start the season.

Big White Fridays

Fridays January-March 2017

4:00-10:00pm

Join the youth department for Friday night Skiing/Snowboarding at Big White. Snowboarding equipment can be borrowed from the WFN Youth/Rec Department. Please bring all appropriate winter gear. A youth out-trip permission form is required to attend. There is no charge for lift tickets, however, youth will need to rent equipment, if needed. IR#10 pickup 4:20pm/return drop-off @ 9:40pm at the Shoppers Drug Parking area.

Saturday Snowboard Club

Saturday (January to March) 8:00am to 4:00pm

Westbank First Nation members with passes to Big White can get a ride in the Youth/Rec Van and head up for a day of boarding or skiing. Ages 12+ are welcome to attend, and while the program is intended for WFN members, community members may catch a ride on the bus, space permitting. There is some equipment available on a first come first serve basis. Any associated costs while up at Big White are the responsibility of the individual. Register the Thursday before to reserve your seat!

Yoga – Michael Christy

Monday and Wednesday (September to June), *Punch card required*

6:30 to 7:30 Multipurpose Room

A certified yoga instructor teaches a basic beginner class in our multi-purpose room facility. These classes run from September to June and are no cost to community members. They are open to WFN members and residents living on-reserve. Contact Community Services to get more information, registration & to get your punch card. Childcare NOT available.

Boot Camp – Denise Leeuwangh

6:00 to 7:00 WFN Gymnasium

A certified personal trainer teaches a basic beginner level boot camp for 15 yrs +. It is advisable to get your physician’s approval before you start any fitness program. Contact Community Services to get more information, registration & to get your punch card. Child care available.

Balance the Body, Calm the Mind, & Connect with the Spirit-Indigenous perspective Yoga w/ Tricia Miller

5:00-6:00pm Siya Room-then moving into the New Youth Facility!!

Join Tricia, certified yoga instructor for a class that provides detailed instruction with focus on proper alignment and safety in movement to postures, while using breath to create inner awareness. This class is suitable for those practicing at beginning level to those more advanced who want to slow down and relax. Basic Hunting Skills 101

October 21st ProD Day (possible winter dates to be determined)

Learn hunting skills, patience, gutting, skinning, butchering, see our traditional hunting territory, see the Derickson Trap line with Raymond Derickson & family, learn gun safety, traditional teachings when hunting, learn how to make a fire, hunting stories, just to name a few of the many exciting opportunities offered.
