ARTIST STATEMENT:

I start with imagery from the natural world and let this take me on a journey.

I use oil paints and monotypes to present my feelings about land, sea and sky.

I am inspired by the concept of making images not specific to a time or place.

My paintings are spontaneous expression of a time - honored subject.

DETAILED ARTIST STATEMENT:

Sea, sky and land colliding are completely ingrained in my visual language.

It just pours out of me. The imagery comes from memory, intuition and emotion rather than reflecting somewhere specific.

My style is influenced by the gestural brushstroke of Abstract Expressionism but the subject matter shows a strong affinity to Romanticism, where nature was the primary source of inspiration.

Although my paintings give the impression of having been executed with great speed,

these are actually constructed over time, in a deliberate fashion by building layers.

I push paint around a lot. Big broad passages of color intermingle with big brushstroke, palette knife and other rhythmic marks which add to the rich surface texture.

Making monotypes is a more intimate way of expressing my work.

Landscapes and natural forms are reassembled into a variety of colorful renditions, sometimes combined with collaged with paper I printed for this specific purpose.
