STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR
SPRAY PAINTING IN SPRAY BOOTH
DEPARTMENT: Plant Management DATE: April 21, 2006
PURPOSE:
This Standard Operating Procedure outlines the procedures to be used by employees doing spray painting in the Paint Booth.
PRIMARY STEPS:
1) CLOSE ALL DOORS LEADING INTO ROOM
2) PREPARE MATERIAL FOR PAINTING
3) GATHER NEEDED PPE
4) BOOTH OPERATORS MUST WEAR AND BE CERTIFIED FOR RESPIRATOR
5) TURN ON FUME HOOD
6) MIX PAINT
7) DO SPRAY PAINT APPLICATION
8) CLEAN UP
9) LEAVE BOOTH VENTILATION SYSTEM ON AFTER COMPLETING SPRAY PAINT OPERATION FOR AT LEAST 45 MINUTES
10) DOFF RESPIRATOR
PROCEDURES:
Step #1: Close all doors leading into room
A) All double set doors shall be shut and locked
Step #2: Prepare material for painting
A) Sand down material
B) Wipe down material with alcohol

Step #3: Gather needed PPE
A) Neoprene gloves for protection against solvent used to thin paint and for cleaning.
B) Respiratory protection
Step #4: Booth operators’ don respiratory protection.
Step #5: Turn on Fume Hood
A) All open chemical containers must be inside Paint Booth
Step #6: Mix paint
A) Wear proper PPE
1) Respirator for chemical vapor
2) Neoprene gloves to protect against solvent absorbing into the skin
Step #7: Spray paint application
A) Spray paint only inside Paint Booth
B) Limit the over spray
C) May need eye protection
1) Safety goggles are recommended when half mask is being used

Step #8: Clean up
A) Wash out paint canister with solvent
B) Empty the rest of the cleaning solvent into storage container
C) Spray solvent inside Booth at water stream to clean spray gun
D) Put paint and solvent back inside Flammable Storage Cabinet
E) Use neoprene gloves to protect hands
F) Discard solvent soaked rags into approved fire resistant metal trash receptacle
Step #9 Leave booths ventilation system running
A) After completing spray operation leave ventilation on for at least 45 minutes
Step #10: Doff respirator
A) Clean Respirator
B) Do post inspection
C) Replace filter cartridge caps or dispose the filter cartridges
D) Put respirator in plastic bag or carrying case
E) Store in a dry, clean area
