AP Biology Immune System Unit

Design a Super Bug

Today you will be creating a super bug that is capable of evading all the defense of the innate immune system. Your ‘bug’ needs to be as scientifically realistic as possible. You will probably need to research real bacteria or specific proteins to accomplish this. For example, a suitable defense may be ‘a virus coated in a protein envelope to evade the immune system’ is biologically possible, but ‘a virus that has two guns and a gas mask’ is not. THIS WILL REQUIRE EFFORT AND RESEARCH! There will be two parts to this project: a visual aid and a written explanation.

Visual Aid (20 Points) To get full credit your visual aid must include the following

  • 10 visible attributes of the ‘super bug’
  • Indication whether bug is viral or bacterial
  • Creativity, Color
  • Scientific Name

Written Explanation (30 Points) To get full credit your written explanation must contain:

  • An explanation of how the super bug avoids the initial innate responses
  • An explanation of how the super bug avoids the early innate response
  • You must include three main techniques discussed in class
  • You must include at least five different types of cells
  • A clear understanding of how each part of the innate immunity helps fight bugs
  • Ex: Don’t just say your bug will be resistant to macrophages, explain how
  • Ex: If you discuss fever or inflammation explain how those aid the immune system in killing bugs
