First Day of Clinical for N316 Maternal Infant Nursing Clinicals Spring 15

Please note your NICU day and your OB day, they may begin before you start clinicals, and they may not be on your assigned clinical day.

Section 1 and 2 Clinical at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, Hammer Monday

Section 1 and 2 Plan to meet at 12:50 pm in the lobby of Advocate BroMenn on 1/23 FRIDAY then as a group ask at the front desk for directions on how to get to the 4th floor computer training room for Meditech training from 1-3pm you will go home after your training. Your clinical instructor will not meet you until your hospital orientation day which is on 1/26.

On 1/26 Monday you will have clinical orientation.

Section 1 ONLY: I will meet you in the lobby of Bromenn at 10:00am. Either bring your lunch or you can eat in the atrium or cafeteria. Wear your uniform. Please be sure to bring the course calendars and all clinical handouts related to Maternal Infant. (see course calendar for 316). Whatever orientation content is not covered will be covered the next clinical day. QS training will be from 1-3pm which will last about 1.5 hours. We will be taking a tour of the unit and complete a newborn assessment, and discuss how to choose patients. Plan to stay until 6PM.

Section 2 Only: I will meet you in the lobby of Bromenn at 1:15pm. Wear your uniform. Please be sure to bring the course calendars and all clinical handouts related to Maternal Infant. (see course calendar for 316). Whatever orientation content is not covered will be covered the next clinical day. Plan to stay until 6PM.

What is expected of you prior to coming to clinical the first day. Please take the time to review the 2 orientation websites, one is for meditech and the other is for Advocate Bromenn, you must and complete the requiredpost tests and print off verification sign off sheet at the end and bring to first clinical.If possible, try to view the Newborn Assessment and Gestational Assessment DVD’s #1883 Parts 1 & 2 BEFORE your clinical orientation day. The Newborn Assessment will mean so much more to you if you have seen these DVD’s ahead of time.

Here's how it works: the students will complete some "homework" prior to coming to class. The homework consists of reading a training document that will familiarize them with our system and the basic functions of Meditech. The students will be asked to complete a short quiz (8 questions) and to bring their completed quiz with them to the hands-on session. Our goal for the length of the hands-on session is 2 hours (or less

You are supposed to park in the “Main St. Employee Parking lot” that is across from the construction zone. Take Rte. 51 South(Main St) from ISU and follow signs for Advocate BroMenn EMERGENCY. You will pass Monical’s Pizza on the left, and the Harper’s Gas station. Then stay in the left lane and turn left on Apple. Cross Rte 51N, and go straight. Employee parking will be on your left. There are shuttle busses that will take you to the front lobby of the hospital.

Section 3 Clinical at St Joseph Medical Center, Tammy’s group Monday 1/26

St Joseph Medical Center is located on the east side of Bloomington across from the Eastland Mall. Here is a link to the OSF St Joseph website with map links: http://www.osfstjoseph.org/facilities/SJMC-parking-map.pdf . You will see that there is parking ‘above’ the area labeled “Eastland Medical Plaza II/ Prompt Care” and the Center for Advanced Medicine entrance. These parking areas are painted white, and are the legal areas for student/faculty/employee parking. Walk from here to the CAM Main Entrance. I will meet you there at 1100am on 1/26, please wear your uniform.

We will be orienting to St Joseph’s Family Birthing Center.. Please wear your uniform: you may wear a colored top with your lab coat, or your uniform with blue or black scrub pants, as you wish. After touring the OB unit, you will observe a newborn assessment, and you will have an opportunity to try to get a set of vitals on a newborn! If possible, try to view the Newborn Assessment and Gestational Assessment DVD’s #1883 Parts 1 & 2 BEFORE your clinical orientation day. The Newborn Assessment will mean so much more to you if you have seen these DVD’s ahead of time.

There will be a quiz on the Accucheck content that we take at clinical. There is also a pdf doc on OSF St Joseph Orientation content that includes all the ‘codes’ of the hospital, where to park, what to wear, and not to wear—that is ST JOE POLICY. You will have meditech training from 1-3pm.

Please plan to bring your lunch or plan to eat in the cafeteria. We will take a tour of the unit and complete a newborn physical assessment and gestational age assessment. If possible, try to view the Newborn Assessment and Gestational Assessment DVD’s #1883 Parts 1 & 2 BEFORE your clinical orientation day. The Newborn Assessment will mean so much more to you if you have seen these DVD’s ahead of time. Plan to stay until 4:00
